Today’s cryptocurrency news is focused on various subsectors, including the forced liquidation of a significant player in the crypto banking industry. This development coincides with heightened regulatory scrutiny from South Korean authorities, intensifying the spotlight on industry practices. Additionally, a backlash against a particular crypto project has emerged, which has drawn community attention. Moreover, recent remarks from Vice President Kamala Harris concerning the United States’ position in the blockchain arena are stirring discussions. Compounding these issues are potential regulatory shifts affecting the crypto gaming scene in Japan.

Regulatory Pressure: The Hidden Factors Behind Silvergate’s Liquidation

Recent insights from bankruptcy documents and insider accounts indicate that the voluntary shutdown of major US crypto bank Silvergate in 2023 was not exclusively a byproduct of the larger cryptocurrency market downturn. Rather, it appears to have been influenced significantly by pressure from officials within the Biden administration. Reports suggest that regulators enforced an unofficial limit on the bank’s cryptocurrency deposits, capping them at 15%, which severely compromised its business model despite the bank’s recovery from a previous bank run in 2022 and a subsequent rise in deposits.

These revelations raise serious concerns regarding the Biden administration’s stance on the domestic crypto sector and suggest a potential intent to stifle this emerging industry while also raising questions about whether such regulatory measures played a role in the regional banking crisis observed in early 2023.

South Korea Pledges Vigilance to Shield Crypto Market from Fraud

In a bid to curtail misconduct in the cryptocurrency sector, South Korean authorities are intensifying their regulatory efforts. Lee Bok-hyun, head of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), stated a strong, zero-tolerance approach towards unfair trading in a meeting with 16 cryptocurrency leaders. He highlighted the importance of tracking prices for new coins and being alert to unverified rumors. They also discussed implementing the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Lee called on firms to adhere to legal requirements and enhance communication with regulators. He promised continued collaboration with policy authorities to resolve regulatory uncertainties and support the industry’s self-regulation.

Setback for Worldcoin: Fines Imposed Over Data Privacy Breaches in South Korea

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of South Korea has fined Worldcoin 1.14 billion won (around $850,000 USD) for violating the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). The commission found that Worldcoin did not sufficiently inform users about how their biometric data, particularly iris scans, would be collected and used. Also, the company did not obtain proper consent from individuals for processing this sensitive data. To make matters worse, Worldcoin illegally transferred this data overseas, mainly to Germany, without proper notifications, breaching additional privacy regulations.

Harris Pledges Global Leadership in Blockchain Tech—Not Everyone Is Convinced

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has evolved her campaign narrative to highlight the importance of America’s leadership in dynamic sectors. In her latest remarks, she vowed to invest in areas including biomanufacturing, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology, signaling a recognition of the revolutionary capabilities these technologies possess.

She advocated for a stable regulatory environment that encourages economic growth while also protecting both consumers and investors. This indicates a noticeable shift away from Trump’s more permissive regulatory framework, which received various responses from the crypto landscape. Many in the cryptocurrency sector remain wary of her actual objectives, particularly due to the proposed tax on Bitcoin mining, which they perceive as a discouraging sign.

Japan’s FSA Aims to Modernize Crypto Gaming Regulations

Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) is working on reforming its crypto gaming laws. It aims to create a framework that simplifies how businesses manage cryptoassets. Current rules, based on the Payment Services Act, make many gaming companies hesitant to explore blockchain gaming. The FSA is also reviewing asset management practices for crypto firms. This comes in response to industry leaders and politicians who believe Japan’s regulations hinder Web3 innovation, pushing startups to move overseas. These talks occur within a Financial System Council working group that advises the FSA.

Shiba Inu Builds Momentum with Strong Trading Activity

Meanwhile, in Shiba Inu news, $SHIB has recently experienced a steady rise, bringing hope to investors. Although the gains have been modest, analyst Crypto Sheriff has sparked renewed interest with predictions of larger increases ahead. Their analysis suggests that a stronger rally could be coming, despite the current slow progression.

SHIB has very recently reached an intraday high of $0.00001509 and a low of $0.00001441. The trading volume was notable, with 2.39 trillion SHIB traded and 35.31 million USDT, indicating strong market activity. High volume often hints at price changes, supporting Sheriff’s beliefs in a potential surge for SHIB soon.

The current state of the cryptocurrency sector emphasizes the multifaceted challenges and developments shaping its future. All of these underscore the need for stakeholders to navigate a complex web of economic, political, and social factors driving the future of digital currency and technology.

A bold vision to create a universal digital identity system hits a snag, as Worldcoin, the ambitious project spearheaded by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, has been slapped with a hefty fine from South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC).

The commission, the country’s watchdog for data privacy, levied a total of 1.14 billion won (roughly $850,000 USD) in fines, corrective orders, and improvement recommendations against Worldcoin Foundation and its associated company, Tools for Humanity Corporation (TFH), for violations of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

The controversy began earlier this year, fueled by a flurry of complaints and media reports, centering on the crypto project’s practice of collecting biometric data, specifically iris scans, from users in exchange for their virtual currency. The PIPC’s investigation revealed that the Worldcoin Foundation, responsible for processing personal information, had indeed collected iris scans from Korean users without a clear legal basis or sufficient notice.

“Worldcoin Foundation took a photo of the data subject’s iris using Orb and used it to create an iris code, but did not properly notify domestic data subjects of the ‘purpose of collection and use’ and ‘retention and use period’ as stipulated in the protection law,” PIPC noted, underlining the lack of transparency.

The commission also emphasized the importance of safeguarding this data, noting that the iris code is “sensitive information (biometric information) that can uniquely identify an individual and cannot be changed.” The PIPC ultimately concluded that Worldcoin had violated the PIPA, which requires separate consent and safety measures for processing such information.

Worldcoin Faces Backlash As South Korea Slaps Crypto Project with $850,000 Fine

Adding to the violations, the investigation determined that the Worldcoin Foundation transferred this sensitive data overseas, primarily to Germany, without providing sufficient notice to the individuals involved. This, too, contravened the PIPA’s requirements for cross-border data transfer.

Beyond these core concerns, the PIPC also noted the lack of a robust deletion function for iris scans and inadequate age verification procedures for minors within Worldcoin’s World App.

The Shib Daily has reached out to both Worldcoin and Tools for Humanity for comment on the hefty fine and corrective orders issued by the PIPC. We’ll update the story as soon as we hear back from either company.

The PIPC’s decision to impose fines on both Worldcoin Foundation and TFH underscored the seriousness of the violations. The commission also issued a series of corrective orders to Worldcoin.

The PIPC’s action highlighted the growing focus on data protection in the age of artificial intelligence and the digital economy. This recent development in South Korea serves as a stark reminder that even innovative technologies like blockchain, with their global reach, must navigate the complex landscape of data privacy and security regulations.

While Worldcoin aims to create a universal digital identity system, its ambitions have now been met with a significant hurdle, forcing the company to reassess its approach and prioritize user rights amidst its expansion.

In response to the PIPC’s findings, Tools for Humanity, the technology company behind Worldcoin, released a statement reaffirming its commitment to user privacy and data protection. The company acknowledged the PIPC’s findings and expressed its willingness to engage in ongoing dialogue with the commission.

“We are gratified by the PIPC’s findings, which validate our unwavering commitment to user privacy and data protection,” said Damien Kieran, Chief Privacy Officer of TFH. “This outcome is the result of months of constructive dialogue and demonstrates that innovation and regulatory compliance can go hand in hand.”

This story has been updated to include a statement from Tools for Humanity, the technology company behind Worldcoin, reaffirming its commitment to user privacy and data protection.

In a world where cryptocurrencies once promised innovation and financial freedom, today’s headlines paint a more troubling picture, featuring tales of fraud, illicit drug distribution networks, and the numerous legal and ethical dilemmas surrounding various crypto ventures. Additionally, the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) with this sector continues to garner attention, while the FTX saga remains an ever-evolving story. Together, these reports underscore the volatility and unpredictability inherent in the crypto space, prompting concerns about the safety and security of users.

Stablecoin Fraud and Other Crypto-Related Crimes on the Rise

The SEC has penalized crypto company TrueCoin LLC and financial services provider TrustToken Inc. for engaging in fraudulent and unregistered sales of investment contracts related to the stablecoin TrueUSD (TUSD). A complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California details how the companies conducted an unregistered offering between November 2020 and April 2023, selling investment contracts and profit-making opportunities without disclosing significant risks to investors. While neither company admitted nor denied the allegations, both have agreed to settle the charges, paying civil penalties of $163,766 each, and have consented to judgments preventing future violations of federal securities laws.

Adding to the list of crimes related to illicit crypto transactions is the recent crackdown by South Korea’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Unit on a drug distribution network. This drug ring allegedly used cryptocurrency for illegal transactions, revealing a concerning trend of virtual assets being used in criminal activities. A 33-year-old distributor was arrested for smuggling methamphetamine into the country, along with six accomplices facing prosecution for drug-related charges. The use of cryptocurrency highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring emerging financial technologies, as officials stress that drug-related crimes threaten both community safety and public health.

Unethical and Exploitative? Worldcoin’s Tech Receives Backlash

Berlin-based cryptocurrency project Worldcoin currently faces serious legal and ethical issues. Despite attracting millions in funding, Worldcoin is under investigation for potential violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), especially concerning its collection of biometric data through iris scans. The business model relies on creating a distinct digital identity, referred to as WorldID, using users’ iris data, which they exchange for WLD tokens.

Furthermore, Worldcoin has been criticized for allegedly exploiting marginalized populations, such as homeless individuals, and has been accused of incentivizing those with substance issues to participate in eye scans. Compounding these controversies, the company is facing scrutiny for potentially infringing privacy laws by scanning minors’ eyes without obtaining necessary parental consent.

Building the Backbone of AI: OpenAI’s Data Center Proposal

In a move aimed at addressing the increasing demand for AI technologies, OpenAI has proposed the establishment of large-scale data centers throughout the United States. The plan outlines the need for up to 5 gigawatts of power for these centers. It also anticipates the creation of tens of thousands of jobs and a positive impact on the U.S. economy, emphasizing that this infrastructure is vital for the country to maintain its AI development leadership and ensure national security.

However, some individuals in the energy sector remain skeptical about such ambitious projects. Joe Dominguez, the CEO of Constellation Energy Corp., highlighted the complexities associated with powering a single 5 GW center and noted that OpenAI’s vision of building multiple centers could face substantial obstacles due to existing issues with the energy grid, supply chain challenges, and workforce shortages. The U.S. currently has an installed nuclear capacity of 96 GW, and in a related development, Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest investor, has partnered with Constellation Energy to rejuvenate the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to supply power for the next two decades.

FTX Fallout: Ellison’s Fate and Salame’s Stark Critique of Legal Disparities

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison has faced sentencing for her involvement in the FTX collapse. While all of this was happening, Ryan Salame, the former co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, accused Ellison of being the one who prompted him to make political contributions. He made sure to emphasize that he had never been asked to do so by Sam Bankman-Fried. He also commented on the flaws within the justice system, suggesting that high-priced attorneys essentially admit that beating the government at trial is nearly impossible.

When challenged on the disparity between his sentence and Ellison’s, considering her pivotal role in the fraud and the corresponding restitution, Salame implied sarcastically that he should have committed more crimes to receive a lighter sentence. Meanwhile, as Ellison was sentenced by Judge Lewis Kaplan, the judge recognized her remorse and exploitation at the hands of Bankman-Fried but emphasized that her cooperation wouldn’t excuse her from the consequences.

Wednesday’s developments paint a complex picture of the cryptocurrency and AI industries. While there are notable developments, the prevalence of crypto-related crimes and ethical dilemmas cannot be overlooked. This duality serves as a reminder that many innovations are still in their infancy. A careful and cautious approach is needed in finding a balance between innovation and responsibility.

Worldcoin, an ambitious cryptocurrency project, is facing significant legal and ethical challenges. The company has attracted millions in investment but now finds itself under investigation for potential violations of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). This is purportedly due to its handling of biometric data and eyeball scanning.

As per DLNews, the core issue revolves around Worldcoin’s business model, which involves scanning users’ irises to create a unique digital identity called WorldID. In return, users receive WLD tokens, the project’s cryptocurrency.

However, authorities have raised concerns about how this biometric data is collected and stored. These things have also led to an investigation into potential GDPR non-compliance.

Exploitation of Vulnerable People

Adding to its woes, Worldcoin is being criticized for allegedly exploiting vulnerable individuals. The same DLNews report states that Worldcoin has taken advantage of homeless people, adding that those with substance abuse issues were even paid to get their eyes scanned.

These concerns are exemplified by reports of similar things happening in Berlin, where exploitation of vulnerable individuals is particularly pronounced. In March and April, the Chechen group conducted an estimated half of the suspicious scans in Berlin. Based on this estimate, the group could have earned approximately 95,000 WLD. When calculated using the average token price during those 61 days, their earnings might have reached around $685,000, the report said.

The report also mentioned that the value of WLD tokens has plummeted by over 85% since March.

Regulatory Challenges Mount for Worldcoin Amid Privacy Concerns

On top of all of these, the company is facing close scrutiny for allegedly breaching privacy protections and scanning the eyes of minors without obtaining parental consent. In January, Hong Kong’s data privacy authority raided six Worldcoin operators in the city and warned the public not to have their eyes scanned.

In March, Spain imposed a ban on Worldcoin, citing the highly sensitive nature of collecting biometric data and reports of the company scanning minors. Portugal’s data regulator followed suit that same month, also prohibiting Worldcoin after receiving complaints regarding the collection of minors’ biometric data without parent consent.

Simultaneously, the regional German regulator is set to release findings from a two-year investigation into whether Worldcoin complies with the European Union’s GDPR guidelines — again to focus on how it manages and stores the biometric data.

The Shib Daily has reached out to Worldcoin for comments on the ongoing circumstances. We will update the article as and when we hear from them.

A shadow market for Worldcoin accounts has drawn the scrutiny of Singaporean authorities, raising concerns about potential breaches of data privacy and the exploitation of the nascent cryptocurrency project.

Illegal Trade of Worldcoin Accounts

Gan Kim Yong, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), disclosed the probe on Monday, revealing that individuals are under investigation for allegedly facilitating the illicit trade of Worldcoin accounts and tokens.

“The Police are investigating seven subjects for their suspected involvement in offering the services of buying or selling of Worldcoin accounts and tokens, which constitute offences under Payment Services Act 2019. The Police have also issued a press release on August 7, 2024 to advise members of the public against giving away or selling their Worldcoin accounts, which may then be misused for criminal activities such as money laundering and terrorism financing,” Yong said during a parliamentary discussion.

“The Payment Services Act 2019 (PS Act) prohibits persons who are unlicensed or not exempted from providing a payment service under the PS Act. Based on information provided to MAS, Worldcoin does not perform a payment service under the PS Act. However, persons who buy or sell Worldcoin accounts and tokens as a business may be providing a payment service,” the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the MAS noted.

Worldcoin Responds

Tools for Humanity, a key contributor to the Worldcoin project, has distanced itself from individuals under investigation in Singapore for allegedly operating a black market for Worldcoin accounts. In a statement provided to The Shib Daily, Tools for Humanity emphasized that the suspects are not affiliated with Worldcoin or its operations in any way.

“Neither Worldcoin nor Tools for Humanity are under investigation by police in Singapore. Individuals being investigated by authorities for possible violation of the Payment Services Act are not affiliated with Worldcoin or its operations in any way. The Worldcoin Foundation in Singapore, and around the world, operates in compliance with relevant laws and regulations pertaining to all aspects of the Worldcoin project including the Payment Services Act in Singapore. Any reports or speculation to the contrary are false and misleading,” Tools for Humanity said.

Ongoing Investigation and Potential Charges

It is worth noting that this is not an isolated situation. In a recent crackdown on illicit cryptocurrency activities, Singaporean authorities have arrested five individuals operating an illegal scheme to buy and sell Worldcoin accounts and tokens. The suspects, part of a sophisticated network, recruited others to sign up for Worldcoin accounts, then seized control of these accounts and digital assets for profit.

During the operation, law enforcement seized over 200 mobile phones, providing crucial evidence of the illegal activities. The individuals arrested face potential charges under the country’s Payment Services Act. This bust highlights the ongoing challenges faced by regulators in combating illicit activities within the cryptocurrency space.

Correction:

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Worldcoin was under investigation in Singapore. The investigation is focused on individuals involved in illegal transactions related to Worldcoin accounts and tokens. Worldcoin continues to operate in Korea and Germany, and there has been a temporary pause in humanness verification services in Spain. The Shib Daily is committed to providing accurate and reliable information. We apologize for any inaccuracies in the previous version.

Portugal has slammed the brakes on the ambitious plans of Worldcoin, the iris biometric cryptocurrency project developed by Tools for Humanity. Facing regulatory headwinds, the company finds itself compelled to hit pause on its biometric data collection efforts within Portuguese borders for a mandated 90-day hiatus.

The National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) has taken decisive action against the Worldcoin Foundation’s data practices, suspending the collection of biometric data—including iris, eye, and facial scans—within Portugal’s borders on Monday. This move aims to uphold the fundamental right to personal data protection, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding minors.

The CNPD has mandated Worldcoin to immediately halt the collection of such biometric information for 90 days. This pause allows the CNPD ample time to conduct a thorough investigation before issuing a final verdict on the matter.

The country’s watchdog disclosed that in recent weeks, it has been flooded with complaints, ranging from unauthorized data collection from minors to lapses in informing data subjects adequately and the inability to delete data or revoke consent. It also revealed the proliferation of Worldcoin’s ‘Orb’ devices in prominent commercial zones has seen a nearly twofold increase in data collection locations over the past six months.

The CNPD expressed concerns over the significant surge in participants, which includes minors, eager to join the Worldcoin initiative and earn tokens.

This uptick has prompted the implementation of pre-booking requirements for both registration and biometric data collection. Alarmingly, the CNPD highlighted the absence of an effective age-verification mechanism for members, raising serious data protection issues.

“Biometric data qualifies as special data under GDPR1 and therefore enjoy increased protection, with the risks of its treatment being high. On the other hand, minors are people particularly vulnerable and are also subject to special protection by the European legislator and national, as they may be less aware of the risks, consequences, and guarantees of the treatment of their personal data, as well as their rights,” CNPD said in its press release as translated by Google Translate.

“This order to temporarily limit the collection of biometric data by the Worldcoin Foundation is, at this moment, an indispensable and justified measure to obtain the useful effect of defending the public interest in safeguarding fundamental rights, especially of minors,” CNPD President Paula Meira Lourenço said.

Worldcoin Foundation data protection officer Jannick Preiwisch said that Worldcoin was “fully compliant with all laws and regulations governing the collection and transfer of biometric data. The report from CNPD is the first time we are hearing from them regarding many of these matters, including reports of underage sign-ups in Portugal, for which we have zero tolerance for and are working to address in all instances, even if a matter of a few reports.”
