Subscription-based streaming service, Netflix, Inc., has announced a new original drama film following a couple racing against time to recover $35 million in cryptocurrency after forgetting their wallet password.

According to What’s On Netflix, the upcoming Netflix Original film, titled One Attempt Remaining, follows a divorced couple who receive text messages from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about an unclaimed cryptocurrency prize they won during a Vegas style cruise they had taken in their earlier years. With the funds now worth millions, the pair must recover their forgotten wallet passwords within three days before access is lost.

Filming is set to begin in February 2026, with Jennifer Garner, star of 13 Going on 30, also serving as a producer on the project.

The film appears inspired by real-life incidents where individuals lost access to vast sums of cryptocurrency due to forgotten passwords or misplaced private keys. One notable example is Stefan Thomas, the former Ripple CTO, who was locked out of an IronKey hard drive containing 7,002 Bitcoin, valued at over $92,000 at the time.

Netflix Taps Crypto Scandals to Captivate Mainstream Audiences

In line with its trend of exploring timely cultural phenomena, Netflix is capitalizing on the growing mainstream interest in cryptocurrency. Netflix has started production on a limited series chronicling the roles of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and ex-Alameda Research executive Caroline Ellison in the high-profile collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange.

The upcoming series will explore the relationship between Bankman-Fried and Ellison, highlighting their roles in one of crypto’s largest scandals and the events that led to FTX’s over $10 billion collapse.

Before FTX’s collapse, Bankman-Fried was considered a leading figure in the cryptocurrency sector, gaining recognition for his innovative approach to digital assets and for rapidly building one of the largest crypto trading platforms. He was noted for his technical expertise, philanthropic initiatives, and outspoken views on cryptocurrency regulation.

The moves signal Netflix’s growing interest in bringing crypto stories to mainstream audiences, reflecting how the digital asset world is increasingly shaping popular culture and storytelling.

Key points:

  • Sam Bankman-Fried’s legal team will argue before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on November 4, seeking to overturn his fraud conviction and 25-year sentence tied to FTX’s collapse.
  • The appeal centers on claims that FTX was not insolvent and that procedural errors by Judge Lewis Kaplan denied Bankman-Fried a fair defense.
  • Bankman-Fried has suggested his prosecution may have been politically influenced, citing shifts in his political stance and alleged timing of his arrest ahead of congressional testimony.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments from Bankman-Fried’s legal team on November 4 as they seek to overturn his conviction and 25-year prison sentence. During the hearing, prosecutors from the Southern District of New York and Sam Bankman-Fried’s new defense team, led by appellate attorney Alexandra Shapiro, will each have 10 minutes to present their arguments. The proceedings will focus on whether the original trial was conducted properly, rather than revisiting the underlying charges.

Bankman-Fried’s appeal is expected to focus on two primary arguments: whether FTX was truly insolvent at the time of its collapse and whether the trial judge, District Judge Lewis Kaplan, made procedural errors during the proceedings.

Attorneys for the former FTX CEO contend that the exchange was never actually insolvent and argue that Bankman-Fried was not given a fair opportunity to defend himself against allegations that he misappropriated customer funds for high-risk trading through Alameda Research. The defense further maintains that the trial created a presumption of guilt, presenting both the jury and the public with an incomplete view of the case.

Since Donald Trump assumed office and adopted a pro-crypto stance, Bankman-Fried has become more vocal in suggesting that his conviction may have been politically motivated, expressing renewed hope that the current administration could lead to a reassessment of his case.

In an October post on GETTR, Bankman-Fried stated that his political stance evolved from center-left in 2020 to a more centrist position by 2022. He attributed the shift to what he described as heightened crypto enforcement under then–U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler and the Department of Justice (DOJ). The former FTX CEO further alleged that the SEC and DOJ initiated actions against him soon after he made substantial contributions to the Republican Party.

Furthermore, Bankman-Fried alleged that House Republicans suggested his arrest was timed to prevent him from testifying before Congress. Lawmakers reportedly called on Gensler to disclose communications concerning the timing of the charges and his detention, intensifying scrutiny of the Biden administration’s approach to the case.

As the appeals process unfolds, Bankman-Fried’s case remains one of the most closely watched in the intersection of finance, technology, and law. Beyond its legal implications, the outcome could set a precedent for how accountability and regulatory oversight are defined in the evolving world of digital assets, where innovation and responsibility continue to collide.

Sam Bankman-Fried, co-founder of the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, has alleged that his 2022 arrest was politically driven, claiming the Biden administration targeted him after he privately contributed tens of millions of dollars to Republican campaigns.

Key points:

  • Sam Bankman-Fried alleges his 2022 arrest was politically motivated, claiming the Biden administration targeted him after donating tens of millions to Republicans.
  • House Republicans have questioned the timing of his arrest and demanded SEC Chair Gary Gensler release communications surrounding the case.
  • The SEC’s Office of Inspector General disclosed that Gensler’s government phone was wiped, deleting nearly a year of messages, intensifying scrutiny of the agency’s transparency.

In a post on the social platform GETTR on Wednesday, Bankman-Fried said his political alignment shifted from center-left in 2020 to a more centrist position by 2022, citing what he described as aggressive crypto enforcement under then-U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler and the Department of Justice (DOJ). SBF claims that shortly after making sizable donations to the Republican Party, the Biden administration’s SEC and DOJ began pursuing charges against him.

“They had me arrested weeks before the crypto bill I was working on was set for a vote—and the night before I was set to testify before Congress,” Bankman-Fried wrote.

Bankman-Fried claimed that House Republicans suggested his arrest was intended to stop him from testifying before Congress. Lawmakers reportedly urged Gensler to release communications related to the timing of the charges and his detention, a move that has fueled further scrutiny of the Biden administration’s handling of the case.

Late last month, the SEC’s Office of Inspector General revealed that Gensler’s official phone was subjected to an “enterprise wipe,” deleting all text messages sent and received between October 2022 and September 2023. Reports indicate the device stopped syncing with the agency’s system in July 2023 and was flagged as “inactive” for 62 days, despite remaining operational.

After unsuccessful forensic efforts to retrieve Gensler’s deleted messages, the SEC’s Office of Information Technology examined phone records to determine his most frequent contacts. Investigators compiled a list of 34 agency employees believed to have regularly communicated with the former SEC chair.

Gensler did not assist in creating the list, and other commissioners were initially excluded. Although staff described most texts as routine, the Inspector General’s review found several that contained substantive, work-related discussions.

As Bankman-Fried continues to serve his sentence, his latest claims mark a new chapter in his post-conviction narrative, one that intertwines politics, regulation, and personal redemption. Whether his allegations gain traction or fade into the broader debate over crypto’s relationship with Washington remains to be seen, but they’ve already reignited scrutiny of how power and policy collide in the digital finance era.

Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of the collapsed crypto exchange FTX, said his “biggest mistake” was handing control of the platform to new management, claiming the move stopped him from potentially saving the company.

Key points:

  • Sam Bankman-Fried expressed regret over handing FTX’s control to John J. Ray III, claiming the decision prevented a potential last-minute investment that could have saved the exchange.
  • John Ray, a veteran restructuring executive, took charge of FTX’s bankruptcy, hiring Sullivan & Cromwell to manage the case and cutting off direct communication with Bankman-Fried amid efforts to recover assets.
  • The FTX Recovery Trust has continued pursuing funds linked to the collapse, recently filing a lawsuit to reclaim over $1 billion allegedly misused in investments tied to Genesis Digital Assets.

In an interview with Mother Jones, Bankman-Fried said his greatest regret was transferring control of FTX to its current CEO, John J. Ray III. He claimed that shortly after finalizing the handover, he was informed of a potential outside investment that might have prevented the exchange’s bankruptcy, but by then, the decision was already irreversible.

Although Ray had “absolutely zero” experience with crypto and the crypto industry, he brought extensive expertise in corporate restructuring and crisis management. He had previously overseen major bankruptcies and turnarounds at companies such as Fruit of the Loom, Nortel Networks, and Residential Capital.

After assuming control of the crypto exchange, Ray promptly initiated bankruptcy proceedings and enlisted the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell to manage the case. Reports indicate that Ray cut off direct communication with Bankman-Fried, declining his attempts to discuss the company’s situation. He is also said to have characterized the FTX founder as a “familiar type of scoundrel.”

Roughly a month after transferring control of FTX to Ray, Bankman-Fried was arrested in December 2022 following the filing of criminal charges by U.S. prosecutors. He was later convicted on seven felony counts connected to the collapse of FTX and its sister trading firm, Alameda Research, which together led to an estimated $8.9 billion in investor losses. Bankman-Fried is now serving a 25-year federal prison sentence.

In late September, the FTX Recovery Trust, the entity overseeing the bankrupt exchange’s remaining assets, filed a lawsuit to recover more than $1 billion it claims was improperly funneled into the crypto mining firm Genesis Digital Assets (GDA).

The complaint, submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, accuses GDA, its affiliates, and two co-founders of receiving $1.15 billion in allegedly misused and commingled funds under the direction of Bankman-Fried.

The FTX Recovery Trust, tasked with managing the bankrupt crypto exchange’s assets, has filed a lawsuit seeking to reclaim over $1 billion, alleging that former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried improperly directed funds into the crypto mining firm Genesis Digital Assets (GDA).

Key points:

  • The FTX Recovery Trust filed a lawsuit seeking to reclaim $1.15 billion, alleging Sam Bankman-Fried improperly funneled funds into Genesis Digital Assets.
  • Bankman-Fried is accused of directing Alameda Research to purchase overvalued GDA shares, benefiting personally while passing losses onto FTX creditors and customers.
  • The case emphasizes broader industry challenges around accountability, mismanagement, and fraud, while the Trust continues distributing recovered funds to creditors.

On September 22, the FTX Recovery Trust submitted a complaint in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware against GDA, its affiliates, and two co-founders, seeking to recover $1.15 billion in allegedly commingled and misappropriated funds. The filing asserts that these funds were linked to Bankman-Fried’s fraudulent activities affecting FTX customers and creditors between 2021 and 2022.

The filing claims that Bankman-Fried instructed FTX’s affiliated firm, Alameda Research, to acquire GDA shares at significantly inflated prices, paying over $500 million for 154 preferred shares. Additionally, it alleges that the FTX CEO personally purchased $550.9 million in GDA shares, sending the funds directly to co-founders Rashit Makhat and Marco Krohn.

Furthermore, the filing alleges that despite Alameda Research’s mounting debt to FTX, Bankman-Fried directed the company to spend billions on significantly overvalued GDA shares. As Alameda’s majority owner, he reportedly stood to gain nearly all of the upside from GDA’s inflated valuation, while the resulting losses were effectively passed on to FTX Group’s creditors and customers.

The FTX Recovery Trust further alleged that Bankman-Fried proceeded with investments in GDA despite clear warning signs, relying on misleading information while disregarding the company’s location in Kazakhstan, which was experiencing an ongoing energy crisis at the time.

Additionally, the FTX Recovery Trust, which began reimbursing creditors in February, recently announced its third distribution tranche, totaling approximately $1.6 billion and scheduled for September 30th.

The lawsuit against GDA spotlights the broader challenge facing the crypto industry when it comes to accountability and financial oversight. As digital assets continue to grow in scale and complexity, cases like this emphasize the risks of commingled funds, mismanagement, and fraudulent activity.

For creditors and stakeholders, the legal proceedings serve as a critical mechanism to recover lost funds and reinforce trust in the ecosystem. While the outcome remains uncertain, the ongoing litigation signals a commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability.

A storm of controversy brews as the possibility of a presidential pardon for convicted fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) gains traction, raising questions about justice and political power.

The saga of Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of FTX, takes another unexpected turn as whispers of a potential presidential pardon gain traction, fueled by high-profile figures and shifting political winds. Just months after receiving a 25-year sentence for fraud and embezzlement, the possibility of SBF’s early release is becoming a topic of intense speculation, raising questions about the intersection of crypto, politics, and the power of clemency.

The rumors of a pardon have been amplified by Elon Musk, a prominent ally of president elect Donald Trump, who recently tweeted that he would be “shocked if this doesn’t happen.” This statement, coupled with a surge in the odds of a pardon on prediction platforms like Polymarket (from 4% to 13%), suggests a growing belief that SBF’s significant political connections could influence his fate.

The Rise of SBF Pardon Speculation: Crypto Ties, Political Influence, and Legal Uncertainty

SBF Rise and Fall: A Dramatic Trajectory

SBF’s trajectory from crypto wunderkind to convicted fraudster has been nothing short of dramatic. Once hailed as the “golden boy” and a leading figure in the industry, he built FTX into one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

His public persona as a tech innovator with a commitment to social causes earned him widespread recognition beyond the crypto circles. However, the collapse of FTX in late 2022 exposed an $8 billion hole in customer funds, sending shockwaves through the financial world and ultimately leading to his conviction on seven charges, including fraud and embezzlement.

The History of Controversial Pardons

A key factor fueling the pardon speculation is SBF’s substantial political donations, primarily to the Democratic Party. He donated over $5 million to pro-Biden super PACs during the 2020 election, making him the second-largest individual donor for the Democratic party after Michael Bloomberg.

This has led many to wonder whether his political influence could play a role in securing a pardon, drawing parallels to past cases where major political donors received clemency.

The history of presidential pardons is rife with examples of controversial decisions, often involving wealthy donors. The pardon of Marc Rich by President Clinton on his last day in office, for example, sparked outrage due to Rich’s ex-wife being a major Democratic donor.

Similarly, Paul Pogue, a convicted tax fraud, was pardoned by Donald Trump after his family donated over $200,000 to Trump’s campaign. These cases highlight the potential for political influence to sway the scales of justice.

Adding to the intrigue, President Biden recently pardoned Michael Conahan, who was sentenced to 17 years in the “kids-for-cash” scandal, demonstrating a willingness to grant clemency even in cases involving serious offenses. According to the Department of Justice, President Biden has granted 16 pardons and 3 commutations since taking office.

This action, coupled with the historical precedent of pardons for political donors, has fueled speculation that SBF might be on President Biden’s radar.

Ethical Questions and the Future of SBF

The possibility of a pardon for SBF raises complex ethical questions. While some may argue that his political connections should not influence his fate, others may see a pardon as a way for the Biden administration to move on from the scandal.

The speculation surrounding a potential pardon for SBF is likely to continue, as the crypto world and the political establishment grapple with the implications of this case. The decision, if it comes, will undoubtedly be controversial, raising fundamental questions about the role of money and influence in the American justice system.

Gary Wang, the former coding chief for FTX, is now developing tools to help the U.S. government detect fraud in the cryptocurrency and stock markets.

Wang, who cooperated extensively with authorities and testified against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried in 2023, is due for sentencing on November 20 for his role in FTX’s collapse.

Wang’s involvement in the investigation has been praised by prosecutors, who have emphasized his willingness to work with authorities and noted his efforts to make amends. Unlike other former executives, Gary Wang has been credited with avoiding deceptive practices and refraining from misusing customer funds, according to his attorney, Ilan Graff.

Prosecutors highlighted Wang’s technical contributions, noting his “outstanding” assistance in creating fraud detection tools that could help the government monitor financial markets. His cooperation and use of his skills have distinguished him in the case, with prosecutors even recommending leniency based on his contributions.

This development follows the recent sentencing of other key FTX figures, including former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, who began her prison term in early November after also cooperating with authorities. Ellison and Wang, as well as FTX’s former engineering chief Nishad Singh, have provided key insights into FTX’s collapse.

In a November 7 sentencing submission, Wang’s legal team emphasized his cooperation as instrumental in unraveling FTX’s internal operations and his unique role in using his technical expertise to aid fraud prevention efforts.

The Gary Wang case reflects a broader shift in the handling of high-profile financial fraud cases, where cooperation and technical expertise can influence sentencing outcomes. Prosecutors view his proactive approach as a valuable asset in strengthening fraud detection. As sentencing approaches, Wang’s contributions may set a precedent for how former insiders can aid in preventing future financial crimes through direct collaboration with authorities.

The estate of the collapsed FTX crypto exchange is pursuing legal action against Binance and its former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, in an effort to recover $1.76 billion.

In the filing, FTX contends that these funds were fraudulently funneled to Binance executives in July 2021 as part of a shares repurchase deal with co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, highlighting the lingering repercussions of the exchange’s failure.

The lawsuit states that Binance sold back its 20% interest in FTX’s international division and 18.4% in its U.S. division. Sam Bankman-Fried financed this deal using a mix of cryptocurrencies from both exchanges. The FTX estate contends that this share repurchase was unlawful, as both FTX and Alameda were already insolvent due to extensive fraud perpetrated by Bankman-Fried and other executives.

Besides seeking fund recovery, the lawsuit also accuses CZ of issuing “false and misleading” posts on X in November 2022. It suggests this was a deliberate tactic to provoke a run on FTX, thereby harming FTX as a competitor and enhancing Binance’s market standing.

“Zhao’s false tweets triggered a predictable avalanche of withdrawals at FTX – the proverbial run on the bank that Zhao knew would cause FTX to collapse,” the filing states.

Allegations of Sabotage in a Bitter Crypto Rivalry

According to the lawsuit, after CZ sold his interests in FTX, he aimed to undermine the competitor. It argues that his statements caused significant damage to the value that FTX stakeholders could have reclaimed.

It also listed details of when FTX management started noticing that Binance was orchestrating a “months-long coordinated FUD [fear, uncertainty, and doubt] campaign against FTX” in the summer of 2022. This was allegedly preceded by a highly publicized conflict between CZ and Bankman-Fried, which stemmed in part from Bankman-Fried’s public comments suggesting that Binance was uncooperative with regulators, leading FTX to distance itself from the exchange.

However, these accusations failed to strike a chord with the public, with a number of users describing FTX as a “cancer” in the crypto space while urging a halt to blaming Binance for its downfall.

Meanwhile, Binance has rejected the accusations, stating in an email to CNBC, “The claims are meritless, and we will vigorously defend ourselves.”

The lawsuit is among several that FTX has initiated against its previous investors, partners, and clients in the bankruptcy court located in Delaware.

FTX was once a $32-billion giant but collapsed into bankruptcy due to overwhelming customer withdrawal requests. This led to a significant drop in the crypto markets. The worst of the market fallout occurred in November of last year. Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven counts of criminal fraud linked to the exchange’s bankruptcy and the misappropriation of customer funds.

Former FTX CEO Caroline Ellison—now known as the “best witness” in courtrooms—just received a two-year vacation in the slammer for her starring role in the collapse of the fallen cryptocurrency exchange. 🚓⛓️‍💥 As you probably know, her job description apparently included misleading investors and practicing a little financial gymnastics with customer cash. 💸

But there is a lot to unpack in this sentencing decision. Let’s start with how a good chunk of the crypto community thinks she got off too easy! 😤 Plus, the judge called the woman of the hour the “best witness.”

Hmm… let’s just say they wonder why she didn’t get more of a “room with a view” for her part in the FTX circus. 🤡

And how about that Ryan Salame, the former co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets? That guy really knows how to stir the pot! He boldly declared that it was Ellison, not Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), who called the shots on those political contributions. 😲 He also lambasted the justice system for how Ellison’s trial played out, quipping that he “should have stolen everyone’s money so I could go to jail for substantially less time.” Apparently, that’s the faster route to a shorter jail sentence! ☠

As one of the many critics of the outcome of Ellison’s trial, he just said what the majority is actually thinking. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. 🤐

Crypto Community Cries Foul Over Ellison’s Short Sentence and Judge’s ‘Best Witness’ Remark

The consensus in the crypto universe is that 24 months is too lenient for her offenses regardless of her level of cooperation. 🤨

Someone commented on Reddit that they, referring to SBF and his friends—definitely including his ex-lover Caroline—were basically running a $32-billion moonlight magic show. 💰🤡 Meanwhile, she’s going to spend a couple of years in a fancy white-collar resort-colored prison, where she’ll probably charm the guards and end up with a get-out-of-jail-early card! 😕 After that, she’ll be sipping piña coladas in some secret hideaway with her billions tucked away. 🍸🏖

Others have a different interpretation of how Judge Lewis Kaplan labeled Ellison as “one of the best prosecution witnesses he’s seen in 30 years on the bench.” 🤪

(Source: Reddit)

Life After FTX: Ellison’s Mother Gives Us the Inside Scoop

It seems Ellison has kept busy these past two years while waiting for her sentence. Her mother, Sara Fisher Ellison, wrote a letter to the judge, asking for a bit of mercy for her daughter. Now we wonder: did this letter somehow tug at the judge’s heartstrings? 🥺

Anyway, her mother said Ellison has been working on a delightful little novella. All set in Edwardian England, it is based on her sister’s fictional romantic escapades. 💋 And now, apparently, there’s another novel in the works!

Ellison’s mother said, “Caroline is a very talented writer.” I mean, if she wrote down everything she told the judge that made him feel soft inside—hence the easygoing sentence—her mom’s probably right. Mother knows best, am I right? 😁

Mrs. Ellison also said her daughter had been moonlighting as an ESL teacher on top of the steamy writing. She insists Caroline genuinely cares about the people she’s helping with her teaching. 🤔 Well, we can’t judge the motherly love, but we kind of doubt stealing billions from people qualifies as caring about people. 😑

But what do you think? 🧐

Best Witness or Best Snitch? Or Neither?

💭 In light of the lenient two-year sentence, what does this suggest about the perceived consequences of white-collar crime in the financial and cryptocurrency sectors?

💭 What are the implications of the judge’s comment about Ellison being the “best witness” for the broader justice system, particularly regarding the role of cooperation in sentencing outcomes for major crypto scandals?

💭 Ryan Salame’s comments imply that some individuals may view the legal system as favoring those who are willing to betray others for their own gain. How does this perception influence trust within the cryptocurrency community? Or is he wrong for thinking this way because they’re all guilty anyway?

💭 Considering how Ellison’s mother seems to be painting her daughter in a different light, owing to the latter’s personal endeavors in writing and teaching, how should society balance rehabilitation and accountability in cases involving financial misconduct where significant harm was done to others?

A Flashback: Ellison’s Intrusive Thoughts

In addition, I think her mother forgot a notable quirk of Caroline’s that has resurfaced recently due to all this chaos. 🤭 Before you leave, here’s one for the road you might want to binge on. Warning about this X thread: if this is Caroline’s idea of romance, her saucy novella could give 50 Shades of Grey a run for its money! 😂

Disclaimer: After consuming this content, you might be inclined to go down the FTX rabbit hole if this is the first time you’re finding out about it! Or, if you’ve been keeping up to date, you might discover surprising details you didn’t know about before. Regardless, if you’re one of the victims that FTX has left in the lurch, you can charge this nightmare to experience and make informed decisions about crypto exchanges going forward!

As Caroline Ellison faced sentencing for her role in the FTX collapse, former FTX digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame took to X (formerly Twitter) not to offer condolences, but to deflect blame and defend former boss Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF).

In a series of tweets, Salame pointedly claimed that Ellison, not SBF, was the one who directed him to make political contributions. “Quick reminder that between SBF and Caroline, only one of them ever directly asked me to make a political contribution and it was Caroline,” he wrote, adding in a separate tweet, “you can ask people to make donations, that’s not illegal… just SBF never asked me to once.”

Ex-FTX Co-CEO Turns on Caroline Ellison, Defending Former Boss

He also offered a cynical take on the justice system, tweeting, “‘It doesn’t matter if you’re guilty or innocent, you basically can’t beat the government at trial’ is what the most expensive lawyers in America tell their clients.” When challenged by a follower who pointed out the disparity between his sentence and Ellison’s, given her central role in the fraud and the billions in restitution she owes, Salame retorted sarcastically, “Yah my mistake, should have stolen everyone’s money so I could go to jail for substantially less time. For everyone saying I didn’t cooperate that’s patently wrong, I just didn’t lie during my proffers to save myself.”

Inside a New York federal courtroom, the weight of the FTX implosion settled onto the shoulders of 29-year-old Ellison. The former Alameda Research CEO, who had admitted to playing a key role in the multi-billion dollar fraud, stood before Judge Lewis Kaplan to receive her sentence.

She received a 2-year sentence, a stark outcome despite Ellison’s cooperation with prosecutors in the case against SBF. Judge Kaplan acknowledged Ellison’s remorse and the fact that she had been exploited by Bankman-Fried, but stressed that her cooperation, while significant, wasn’t a free pass.

The legal net cast over the FTX wreckage continued to ensnare its former executives. Salame, once a high-ranking figure within the collapsed cryptocurrency empire, found himself on the receiving end of a 90-month prison sentence, coupled with an order to pay over $11 million.

His cooperation with authorities, which included providing crucial testimony against Sam Bankman-Fried, seemingly offered little reprieve. Meanwhile, the legal battles extended beyond Salame himself.

Prosecutors pursued charges against his fiancée, Michelle Bond, a former crypto lobbyist and congressional candidate, alleging she illegally funded her campaign using FTX funds channeled through Salame. The severity of Salame’s sentence and the ongoing prosecution of Bond underscored the far-reaching consequences of the FTX fraud, a saga that culminated in the conviction and 25-year prison sentence of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research, is scheduled to be sentenced today in New York for her involvement in the collapse of FTX.

Despite pleading guilty to fraud and money laundering charges in December 2022, many on the Polymarket platform are betting that she will avoid prison time. As of Monday, 43% of bettors on the platform predicted no jail time for Ellison.

The bets reflect varying opinions, with 19% of Polymarket users predicting a sentence between 1 and 11 months, and 28% estimating a sentence of 12 to 23 months. Polymarket allows participants to purchase shares in predictions, with each share paying $1 if the forecast proves correct. As of this month, shares betting on Ellison receiving no jail time were trading at 48 cents, indicating a 48% chance that she will be spared incarceration.

Ellison was a key figure in the fraud case involving her former partner and FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. She has cooperated with federal prosecutors as part of her plea deal, which contributed to speculation that she may receive a reduced sentence. Ellison’s testimony in Bankman-Fried’s trial was a pivotal moment in the proceedings, culminating in the former FTX CEO receiving a 25-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors have acknowledged Ellison’s cooperation. A letter from U.S. attorneys, submitted to the court on September 17, highlighted the challenges Ellison faced due to her involvement in the case.

“The government cannot think of another cooperating witness in recent history who has received a greater level of attention and harassment,” the letter stated. It also noted the potential for long-term consequences on Ellison’s professional life.

Polymarket bettors have shown varying degrees of success in predicting sentences in other high-profile crypto cases. While they correctly anticipated that Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao would receive less than six months in prison, they were less accurate in forecasting Bankman-Fried’s 25-year sentence. Only 27% of participants predicted a sentence between 20 and 30 years, while 28% had expected a much harsher punishment of 40 to 50 years.

Ellison’s cooperation is seen as a major factor in her case, and her sentencing will be closely watched given her central role in the downfall of FTX.

Caroline Ellison, once a key player in the FTX empire and confidante of Sam Bankman-Fried, is now poised to face sentencing for her role in the company’s spectacular collapse. But days before her scheduled hearing, the narrative surrounding Ellison has shifted dramatically. The U.S. government, in a compelling letter to Judge Kaplan, recommends no jail time and no fine. citing her “extraordinary cooperation with the government” and compelling character testimonials.

The recommendation, if adopted by Judge Kaplan at Ellison’s sentencing hearing on September 24, would mark a significant victory for the former crypto executive, who pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the FTX fraud and has been cooperating extensively with authorities.

The Probation Department’s presentence report, filed Tuesday night, highlighted Ellison’s crucial role in securing the conviction of Bankman-Fried, who was found guilty on all counts earlier this month. Her testimony, prosecutors argued, provided invaluable insights into the inner workings of FTX and Alameda Research, revealing the intricate mechanisms and motivations behind the fraudulent schemes that ultimately led to the companies’ downfall.

presentence report of the Probation Department on Caroline Ellison

Ellison’s legal team, in a bid to secure even greater leniency, has painted a portrait of its client as a victim of manipulation and her own psychological vulnerabilities. In a filing last week, they urged Judge Kaplan to consider a sentence of time served and supervised release, arguing that Ellison was deeply influenced by Bankman-Fried’s controlling personality and the pressure-cooker environment of FTX.

Ellison’s legal team’s filing, accompanied by personal diary entries and redacted letters of support, offered a glimpse into Ellison’s emotional state during her time at Alameda Research. “Over time, Caroline’s moral compass warped,” the filing stated. “At Mr. Bankman-Fried’s direction, she took actions that she knew to be wrong, helping him steal billions. She lived in dread, knowing that a disastrous collapse was likely, but fearing that disentangling herself would only hasten that collapse.”

The juxtaposition of these narratives – the government’s praise for Ellison’s cooperation and her legal team’s portrayal of her as a victim – created a complex and nuanced picture. While Ellison’s cooperation has undoubtedly been crucial to the government’s case, the extent to which she was a willing participant in the FTX fraud remains a subject of debate.

As Judge Kaplan prepares to hand down his sentence, he must weigh Ellison’s significant contributions to the prosecution of Bankman-Fried against the severity of her crimes and the potential deterrent effect of a prison sentence. The decision will have far-reaching implications, not only for Ellison’s future but also for how the justice system approaches the prosecution of individuals implicated in complex financial frauds, particularly in the burgeoning and often opaque world of cryptocurrency.

In the grand saga of crypto scandals, Sam Bankman-Fried’s appeal for a retrial stands out like a particularly spicy meme coin. It’s a tale of alleged bias, questionable legal tactics, and a whole lot of drama.

Ladies and gentlemen, pull up a chair, grab your popcorn 🍿, and let’s dive into the latest twist in the FTX soap opera: Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is back, and he wants a retrial. Yes, you heard that right. Just when you thought the FTX saga couldn’t get any spicier, SBF throws a Hail Mary, claiming that the judge in his case wasn’t playing fair. 🎯

Crypto ‘Legal Drama’ Continues

Apparently, Judge Lewis Kaplan was too “mean” to him. 🙄 According to SBF’s very serious 102-page appeal, the judge made “biting comments” and “derided” his defense in front of the jury. Because clearly, sarcasm in a courtroom is the real crime here, right?

Crypto

But wait, there’s more! The timing of this appeal is chef’s kiss 👌—just days after his ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison pulled the “I was manipulated by this man-child” card in her own plea for a slap on the wrist.

So let’s break this down: SBF claims he didn’t commit fraud (because, c’mon, who even lost any money?), and Caroline claims she was under his evil spell, despite definitely knowing how to balance a checkbook while running Alameda Research into the ground. 🧮 But hey, we all make mistakes, right? 😬

Crypto ‘Love Story’ Turns Sour

Exhibit A: The “Not-So-Evil” Exchange 🏦 SBF’s defense hinges on the idea that FTX wasn’t really insolvent. Nope, just a slight misunderstanding! Sure, billions vanished into thin air like a David Copperfield trick, but that’s no reason to panic! We’re all gonna get our money back… eventually… probably… maybe… 🌀🤷‍♂️

Exhibit B: Caroline, the Victim™ 💔 Meanwhile, Caroline’s legal team is out here painting her as a poor, fragile soul who was just trying to make sense of it all while being manipulated by SBF’s mind games. “He told me to take Adderall to perform better!” she cries. We can only imagine her diary: “Day 32: Sam ghosted me again. Also, we may have committed fraud. Whoops.” 😢📓

Crypto Caroline Ellison
@ClownWorld_

But let’s be real here—is this manipulation or just bad dating advice? Crypto bros, take note: encouraging your significant other to pop some pills might backfire, especially if you’re running a multi-billion-dollar scam. 💊💸

Thought-Provoking Questions

  • Was Caroline really a pawn in SBF’s grand game of crypto chess, or did she just realize too late that the king was about to topple? ♟
  • Why is it always the exes who turn state’s evidence? Is this a lesson in crypto and relationships? 💔
  • If FTX wasn’t insolvent and no one really lost money, why is everyone still mad? 🧐
  • Should we be more concerned about the billions in lost investments or the fact that someone as smart as Caroline couldn’t see the red flags in SBF’s texts? 📱🚩

The Never-Ending Drama

Exhibit C: The Media Circus 🤡 Ah, the media—always there to fuel the fire. Caroline’s team threw shade at The New York Times and Michael Lewis for publishing SBF’s love letters, claiming they prejudiced the case. I mean, who wouldn’t be interested in a romantic subplot when billions are on the line? ❤📚

Meanwhile, Caroline has been doing some top-notch volunteer work since the FTX fallout. Soup kitchens, literacy classes—because when life gives you lemons (or prison sentences), you give back to the community. 🍋🤲

What’s Next? Caroline’s sentencing is coming up, and all eyes are on Judge Kaplan. Will he be lenient, recognizing her as the true victim here? Or will he deliver another biting comment to match SBF’s appeal? 👀 Stay tuned, folks—this crypto drama isn’t over yet.

Disclaimer: No crypto bros were harmed in the making of this article. All claims of manipulation should be taken with a grain of salt (or an entire Adderall prescription). FTX, SBF, and Alameda Research are not responsible for your lost investments, poor dating choices, or tendency to ghost. Proceed with caution in both crypto and love. 😎

The filing, accompanied by personal diary entries and redacted letters of support, offered a glimpse into Ellison’s tumultuous journey through the high-stakes world of cryptocurrency, painting a picture of a brilliant but troubled young woman caught in the web of Bankman-Fried’s ambition and deceit.

“Over time, Caroline’s moral compass warped. At Mr. Bankman-Fried’s direction, she took actions that she knew to be wrong, helping him steal billions. She lived in dread, knowing that a disastrous collapse was likely, but fearing that disentangling herself would only hasten that collapse,” the filing read. “When FTX finally collapsed, Caroline felt intense sadness for all the people they had betrayed, but also tremendous relief, because she did not have to go on lying and stealing for Mr.Bankman-Fried,” the filing further stated.

Ellison

Ellison: A Victim, Not Mastermind

Ellison, once a close confidante of Bankman-Fried and a rising star in the crypto world, pleaded guilty last year to fraud charges and became a key witness in the government’s case against him. Bankman-Fried was convicted in October on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, a dramatic downfall for the onetime crypto wunderkind.

Now, as Ellison awaits sentencing on Sept. 24, her lawyers are seeking to distance her from Bankman-Fried, arguing that she was not a mastermind of the fraud but rather a pawn in his elaborate scheme. They contend that she was manipulated by Bankman-Fried, who encouraged her to take Adderall to enhance her performance, leading to a dependence that clouded her judgment.

The memo also detailed a tumultuous romantic relationship with Bankman-Fried, marked by repeated “ghosting” on his part, that left Ellison emotionally vulnerable and further susceptible to his influence.

Ellison’s legal team also took aim at the media frenzy surrounding the FTX case, criticizing The New York Times and author Michael Lewis for publishing leaked letters from Bankman-Fried that they said created a hostile environment for their client and potentially prejudiced the case against her.

The memo highlighted Ellison’s efforts to make amends for her actions, noting that she has been unable to find a paying job due to the notoriety of the case. Instead, she has dedicated herself to volunteer work, including serving at soup kitchens and teaching adult literacy classes.

Ellison’s Fate Hangs in the Balance

“Caroline poses no risk of recidivism and presents no threat to public safety. It would therefore promote respect for the law to grant leniency in recognition of Caroline’s early disclosure of the crimes, her unmitigated acceptance of responsibility for them, and—most importantly—her extensive cooperation with the government,” her lawyers wrote.

Ellison’s fate now rests with Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the Federal District Court in Manhattan. Her case has captivated the financial world, offering a cautionary tale of ambition, deception, and the perils of the largely unregulated cryptocurrency industry. Ellison’s sentencing will be another chapter in the saga, as the court grapples with the question of how to punish those responsible for the collapse of FTX, which cost investors billions of dollars.

Move over, Wolf of Wall Street, there’s a family of alleged financial schemers in town, and they’re playing with crypto, not stocks. 🤯 The Bankman-Frieds, once revered as crypto royalty, are now in the hot seat, their alleged political puppeteering laid bare by a trove of emails seen by The Wall Street Journal.

Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced FTX founder, wasn’t acting alone in his political power play. Oh no, his whole family was reportedly moonwalking their way into Washington’s heart (and wallet). Brother Gabriel, the self-proclaimed Donation Maestro, allegedly curated a list of Democratic politicians, showering them with FTX funds like it was a crypto-themed strip club. 💸

Meanwhile, Mama Fried, the queen of subtle persuasion, reportedly hit up Sam for six-figure sums as casually as asking for a cup of sugar. “Hey, sweetie, can you spare a hundred grand for my pet project? 😉” And let’s not forget dear old Dad, the Tax Wizard, who allegedly ensured the family’s “generosity” was as tax-efficient as possible. Talk about a family that plays together, preys together. 😈

But this isn’t just about lavish political donations; it’s about power, influence, and the blurring of lines between personal wealth and corporate funds. 💥 Gabriel’s $5 million donation to his own advocacy group? Is that charity or empire-building? Barbara’s generous contributions to progressive causes? A calculated investment in political goodwill?

This crypto-fueled family saga raises some serious questions:

  • Is this the new playbook for political influence? Have we entered an era where crypto billionaires can essentially buy political favors? 🤑
  • Are our political systems so vulnerable to the whims of volatile digital fortunes? Can we trust a system where wealth, even in its most ephemeral form, holds such sway? 🏛
  • What does this say about the ethical standards of the crypto industry? Is this an isolated incident or a symptom of a larger problem? 🤔
  • Who will be the next crypto clan to try their hand at political puppetry? Are we witnessing the rise of a new aristocracy, fueled by digital gold? 👑

The Bankman-Fried saga is more than just a cautionary tale; it’s a wake-up call. It’s a stark reminder that the marriage of money and power, regardless of the currency, can lead to a dangerous concentration of influence. It’s a challenge to our democratic ideals, a test of our regulatory systems, and a question mark hanging over the future of crypto itself.

Sam Bankman-Fried, the controversial crypto tycoon recently convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud, has expressed deep regret regarding several of his decisions.

One of his major regrets is stepping down from his position as the leader of the crypto giant FTX. He said had he remained at the helm, FTX could have evolved into a flourishing company with a valuation of $80 billion.

Facilitated by William Cohan of Puck News and arranged by his mother, Barbara Fried, an American lawyer and professor emeritus at Stanford Law School, this exclusive conversation provided a rare glimpse into Bankman-Fried’s thoughts and emotions during this tumultuous period.

Described as “considerably thinner” and exhibiting a demeanor that was “less manic, less fidgety” by Cohan, Bankman-Fried maintained a strong presence and unwavering eye contact throughout the interview. He candidly expressed his regrets, particularly regarding his decision to step down as the leader of crypto giant FTX, saying had he remained at the helm it could have altered the company’s trajectory toward a staggering $80 billion valuation.

During the interview, Bankman-Fried reflected on his conviction, expressing a belief that he was unfairly targeted as the “fall guy” for FTX’s collapse. He admitted to errors in judgment that left the company vulnerable to external pressures but emphasized that these missteps were civil rather than criminal in nature.

Despite the legal battles and public scrutiny, Bankman-Fried maintains his innocence, asserting that he did not commit any crimes and lamenting a lack of opportunity to negotiate with prosecutors adequately.

Furthermore, Bankman-Fried pointed fingers at the lawyers who assumed control of FTX after his departure, attributing the exchange’s downfall to their management. He expressed regret over not being able to prevent this collapse, and his legal team’s disapproval of certain decisions, such as appointing Caroline Ellison as head of Alameda Research, saying, he should have tried harder to find someone for that position.

The co-founder of FTX has requested to remain at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) until he files his appeal in July. According to a recent report, he engages in discussions with his new lawyer “nearly every weekday for an hour or so.” Additionally, his approved prescription medication has helped him maintain clarity of thought during this challenging period.

In April, Sam Bankman-Fried filed an appeal challenging the court’s earlier imposition of a 25-year sentence. Beyond the legal proceedings, his requests extend beyond the courtroom, emphasizing the need for a specific placement in a California jail. This strategic choice is intended to maintain proximity to his family during the appeal process.

In a legal saga that continues to stun the cryptocurrency industry, the financial realm, and even the world, Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of the then-crypto behemoth FTX, once again filed an appeal for the court’s earlier sentence. Amid the appeal of a stringent 25-year sentence, the demands of the once dubbed “golden boy of crypto” extend beyond the courtroom, advocating for a specific placement in a California jail, strategically chosen to maintain proximity to cherished family ties.

During Bankman-Fried’s sentencing hearing on March 28, defense lawyer Marc Mukasey revealed plans for an appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Facing the potential of a lengthy prison term and spending it with other convicted individuals, the 32-year-old former billionaire lodged appeals against both his conviction and the 25-year sentence.

Aside from that, his lawyers also highlighted on the appeal that Bankman-Fried should serve his sentence near his family’s home in California. SBF, as he is more popularly known in the crypto space, is the firstborn son of renowned Stanford scholars Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman. His parents pledged their California home as security for their son’s release in December after a New York judge decided to set his bail at a staggering quarter billion dollars.

“Defendant Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced on March 28, 2024, primarily to 25 years imprisonment, to be served, if possible, near his family’s home in California. (ECF 424),” the appeal read.

In addition to these requests, Bankman-Fried’s defense team also petitioned the court to permit him to stay at his current detention facility, the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, to facilitate his access to his legal representatives while waiting to submit their legal arguments and pending the court of appeal’s decision.

“Мг. Bankman-Fried respectfully requests, pursuant to Rule 38(b)(2) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, that the Court supplement its recommendation to the Bureau of Prisons (‘BOP’) by issuing the attached proposed order recommending that the BOP allow him to remain at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn to facilitate access to his appellate counsel pending the filing of the briefs in his anticipated appeal,” Bankman-Fried’s lawyers said in the appeal.

Furthermore, Bankman-Fried’s appeal disclosed that the government has chosen to maintain a neutral position regarding SBF’s request. SBF’s lawyers shared that the government has informed them that they take no position on the request, refraining from expressing either support or opposition.

Adrian Mendoza, Managing Partner at Lillig & Thorsness, Ltd. expressed his opinion on Bankman-Fried’s 25-year prison sentence. “Twenty-five years is a long time as SBF is going to learn. He is about to lose the prime years of his life. I followed the trial closely, and when I hear people say that he made mistakes in his altruistic investing strategies I disagree. This was outright fraud; deliberate and intentional.”

The lawyer who specializes in the areas of complex civil and commercial litigation added, “For such an intelligent and well-educated young man he seemingly lacked a vital characteristic – integrity. For him, the end justified the means.” He further noted, “Young entrepreneurs and professionals need to understand that a career is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t cut corners and jeopardize your livelihood and potentially your freedom.”

In a startling revelation, the rapid progression of the prosecution against Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced crypto mogul convicted of seven counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering, has been attributed primarily to the cooperation of FTX co-founder and chief software engineer Gary Wang, according to a U.S. prosecutor.

The latest development sheds new light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the case, showcasing the pivotal role played by key figures within FTX, the fallen crypto empire, against their former boss and friend.

“This case moved at lightning speed,” remarked U.S. Attorney Damian Williams to the press following Bankman-Fried’s conviction last week.

While information was scarce on how the prosecution swiftly pursued the crypto mogul, who vehemently denied culpability for the crimes leveled against him, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thane Rehn shared an insider scoop on the camp’s trump card a few days after Bankman-Fried’s sentencing.

Speaking at a discussion hosted by law firm Wilson Sonsini, Rehn underscored Wang’s indispensable contribution in helping investigators understand how Bankman-Fried embezzled billions of dollars in customer funds.

“Without that, would we have found it? Probably,” Rehn said. “But it would have taken a software expert weeks or even months.”

Wang’s expertise expedited the investigative process, highlighting the significant impact of his collaboration in expediting the discovery of critical evidence.

Wang and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison pleaded guilty to federal charges in the Southern District of New York.

This pivotal event took place in December 2022, mere weeks after the high-flying crypto exchange FTX, along with its affiliates, declared bankruptcy, leading to the resignation of crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and his top lieutenants.

Wang stood before the court and entered a guilty plea on multiple federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, actual wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodities fraud, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud, Williams confirmed at the time.

Wang met Bankman-Fried in the carefree days of childhood when they were both 7 years old at a summer camp and later ended up attending the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“From a young age, he was very quiet and solely focused on his strongest interest in math and coding,” Wang’s father shared. “He was very naïve, believing everyone around him was good.”

“He was an idealist and full of care toward the world,” Wang’s father further said.

“Gary is scared,” Bankman-Fried revealed in an interview in November 2022.

In December of the same year, Ilan Graff, Wang’s attorney, shared, “Gary has accepted responsibility for his actions and takes seriously his obligations as a cooperating witness.”

When he testified against SBF in December, Wang confessed their collaborative fraud, detailing how they engineered a computer code granting Alameda unrestricted withdrawal rights to FTX customer funds and facilitated lenient margin trading collateral requirements.

Bloomberg disclosed last month that since early 2023, Wang has secured employment at a tech company, drawing on insights from an individual familiar with his job situation.

On numerous occasions, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the disgraced crypto mogul of the then-$32 billion crypto empire FTX, asserted his belief that his actions were not in violation of the law.

His steadfast denial, however, stood in stark contrast to the court’s verdict, which found him guilty on seven criminal charges, including fraud and conspiracy and sentenced him to 25 years in prison.

Even before and throughout the tumultuous proceedings, SBF’s public statements veered between denial and blame.

Following his sentencing, the fallen crypto king spoke for the first time and expressed his disbelief at the legality of his actions, saying, “I never thought that what I was doing was illegal.”

He also acknowledged his personal failure to meet his ethical benchmarks, admitting, “But I tried to hold myself to a high standard, and I certainly didn’t meet that standard.”

During his sentencing last week, U.S. Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan delivered a scathing indictment, encapsulating the sentiments shared by many of Bankman-Fried’s critics.

“I am not diminishing the harm. The brazenness of his actions. His exceptional flexibility with the truth. His apparent lack of any remorse. I want to add one further thought. I did not think it a fruitful use of time to spell out every lie,” Judge Kaplan said.

“When not lying, he was evasive, hair-splitting, trying to get the prosecutors to rephrase questions for him. I’ve been doing this job for close to 30 years. I’ve never seen a performance like that,” the federal judge added.

Despite his assertions of innocence, Judge Kaplan accused SBF of perjury and criticized him for showing no remorse for the crimes committed.

In interviews, SBF adamantly denied any involvement in fraudulent activities, attributing FTX’s substantial losses to mislabeled internal accounts. Yet, he also admitted to mistakes and expressed regret for the fallout that ensued.

Bankman-Fried stepped into the spotlight at the New York Times’ Dealbook Summit and was interviewed by journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin shortly after FTX and its affiliated companies filed for bankruptcy in November 2022.

The crypto executive staunchly denied any involvement in fraudulent activities, asserting, “I didn’t ever try to commit fraud on anyone. I didn’t knowingly co-mingle funds.”

In the face of mounting scrutiny, SBF’s explanations raised more questions than answers.

Bankman-Fried outrightly attributed the substantial losses at FTX to mislabeled internal accounts, asserting that Alameda’s actual position, hidden within a hard-to-detect account, was “billions of dollars larger than it appeared to be.”

In another instance, the founder of Alameda Research claimed, “These problems are problems which I believe happened over the last year or so. And I haven’t been running Alameda during that year. I was not deeply aware of what was going on.”

Bankman-Fried also admitted to feeling “heavily pressured” to involve FTX’s U.S. subsidiary in bankruptcy proceedings, attributing this decision to poor information from “people I no longer believe were acting in the interest of customers.”

When asked in another interview about potential fund redirection to Alameda, SBF unequivocally responded, “I did not know that there is any improper use of customer funds.”

SBF pleaded not guilty in court and released a statement at the time, asserting, “I didn’t steal funds, and I certainly didn’t stash billions away.”

But Bankman-Fried is remorseful, according to ABC.

“I’m haunted, every day, by what was lost. I never intended to hurt anyone or take anyone’s money. But I was the CEO of FTX, I was responsible for what happened to the company, and when you’re responsible it doesn’t matter why it goes bad,” SBF said.

“I’d give anything to be able to help repair even part of the damage. I’m doing what I can from prison, but it’s deeply frustrating not to be able to do more,” he added.

Bankman-Fried’s denial of the allegations against him may be influenced by his belief in effective altruism, which encourages actions aimed at maximizing societal benefit from a utilitarian perspective.

This belief system could potentially influence how individuals, including Bankman-Fried, justify their decisions and actions, perceiving them as aligned with a greater good or a broader mission to benefit society, even when those actions face scrutiny or legal and ethical challenges later on.

However, without explicit statements from Bankman-Fried linking his defense or denial directly to his belief in effective altruism, any connection remains speculative.

Individuals often draw upon a complex set of beliefs and justifications for their actions, and it’s important to consider the multifaceted nature of personal motivations and ethical frameworks when analyzing their behaviors and public statements.

As the countdown to Sam Bankman-Fried’s sentencing, the co-founder of the defunct FTX crypto derivatives platform approaches its final stretch of just ten days, prosecutors have unveiled a series of elaborate schemes reportedly concocted by the embattled mogul. These revelations shed light on Bankman-Fried’s desperate attempts to evade imprisonment in the aftermath of his arrest.

Attached to the U.S. government’s sentencing memorandum, a Google document exposed a startling compilation of “random and probably bad ideas” attributed to Bankman-Fried. These notions, conceived in a bid to salvage his beleaguered public image, offer insight into the desperate measures undertaken by the embattled crypto mogul in the wake of FTX’s dramatic collapse and his subsequent arrest.

The concept outlined various tasks, such as embracing the narrative of “the lawyers were in a shitty situation, and I feel really bad about that; and like most people do, they reacted poorly to difficult circumstances.” Additionally, it suggested appearing on Tucker Carlson’s show and publicly declaring affiliation with the Republican party. Subsequently, it proposed three bulleted ideas, including coming out against the “woke agenda” and highlighting how a legal cartel undermines entrepreneurs to mask lawyer incompetence.

Other intriguing ideas proposed by the once “golden boy of crypto” include emphasizing the message “I’m really glad the Chapter 11 team has stepped in, they’re great, and even better I have funding that can help make customers more whole while the Chapter 11 team does what is needed to clean things up.” Additionally, suggestions involve arranging an interview with Michael Lewis on platforms like ABC, engaging in a head-to-head debate with Matt Levine on Odd Lots, and embracing the narrative of tail risk crashes while highlighting the improbable nature of the event. Other proposals include conveying a message of “Alameda was incompetent” and adopting a strategy of radical honesty on Twitter, delving into both the “gory” details of what happened and the subsequent lawyer missteps.

The sentencing memorandum revealed that the Google document suggests a “significant likelihood” of Bankman-Fried committing another fraud if released back into society. “That is not just speculation. In the days following FTX’s bankruptcy, and even after the defendant had been indicted, he mused about launching ‘Archangel LTD,’ which would be an alternative to FTX’s bankruptcy and would result in the re-launching of an exchange,” prosecutors alleged.

Bankman-Fried is scheduled for his sentencing on March 28 after he was convicted in November 2023 on fraud and money laundering charges.

Once celebrated as the “golden figure of crypto” and the visionary leader behind the then-formidable crypto empire FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried now seeks a more lenient sentence, aiming for 78 months or less. He expressed a desire for a fairer outcome, emphasizing his lack of greed and asserting that he “is already being punished.”

Leading his defense, attorney Marc Mukasey launched a robust critique against the Pre-sentence Investigation Report’s (PSR) suggestion of a century-long sentence. “That recommendation is grotesque,” attorney Mukasey wrote in a sentencing memorandum filed on February 27, referencing a pre-sentencing report by probation officers.

Emphasizing Bankman-Fried’s status as a first-time offender and the likelihood of FTX clients reclaiming the majority of their funds, SBF’s lawyers underscored the disproportionate nature of the proposed sentence, the court filing showed.

Moreover, Mukasey argued that the probation office’s recommendations “substantially overstates the seriousness of Sam’s offense, which warrants a downward departure.”

For his lawyers, Bankman-Fried should instead be sentenced to a prison term of five to six-and-a-half years noting that the sentencing should consider the crypto mogul’s “charitable works” and how he  “demonstrated commitment to others.”

In a detailed defense, Mukasey contested portrayals of Bankman-Fried as a figure devoid of morality, refuting allegations of fraudulent activities costing billions to customers as it painted a contrasting image of SBF, emphasizing his altruism, kindness, and the absence of predatory intentions in his actions.

“Sam Bankman-Fried has been described as a ‘sociopath,’ ‘a man with no morals, remorse or empathy,’ who is an ‘an ice-cold manipulator, bully and shameless liar,’” his lawyers said in the court filing. “But they don’t know the true Sam Bankman-Fried.”

“Sam was not predatory. He did not set out to prey on the elderly, the unsophisticated, or implement a plan to poach pension assets. His conduct falls far lower on the culpability scale.” He also “never intended to cause loss for the purpose of his own personal gain.”

In November, Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, facing a potential maximum sentence of 110 years. This verdict has sparked discussions among legal experts about the likely duration of his sentence, with estimates ranging significantly based on various factors, including his behavior.

Bankman-Fried’s legal struggles intensified following the revocation of his bail in August 2023, after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan identified credible evidence of witness tampering

His sentencing is set to take place on March 28.
