Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has warned users against relying solely on AI, urging them to treat AI models as tools rather than unquestionable sources, citing their potential for errors.

According to a report by the BBC News, Pichai emphasized the need for a robust information ecosystem instead of relying solely on AI, emphasizing expert concerns over generative AI tools, like chatbots, producing misleading or false information.

“This is why people also use Google search, and we have other products that are more grounded in providing accurate information,” Pichai stated.

Pichai acknowledged that while AI tools can be valuable for creative tasks, such as drafting content or generating ideas, users must recognize their limitations. He emphasized that these tools are not infallible and should not be relied upon blindly. According to the Google CEO, understanding what AI excels at, and where it can make errors, is essential for using it effectively, ensuring that outputs are treated as guidance rather than unquestionable truth.

Pichai also described the surge in AI investment as an “extraordinary moment” but cautioned that elements of the current AI boom showed signs of “irrationality.”

The remarks of the Google CEO follow recent discussions in the tech world surrounding Wikipedia and Elon Musk’s AI-powered, open-source alternative, Grokipedia, which has been making headlines.

In a recent X post, Musk noted that Grok and Grokipedia are designed with accuracy as their top priority. Musk emphasized the platform’s commitment to delivering “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” acknowledging that while perfect accuracy may be unattainable, the team remains dedicated to striving toward it.

As AI continues to expand across industries, from content creation to research and decision-making, it’s crucial to remember that these tools are not infallible. Even the most advanced models rely on the data they are trained on, which can contain biases, gaps, or outdated information.

Organizations adopting AI should implement oversight, validation processes, and transparency measures to ensure outputs are accurate and responsible. For individuals, simple habits like questioning unusual results, consulting trusted references, and combining AI with human insight can make all the difference. In a world increasingly shaped by AI, thoughtful skepticism is not just prudent, it’s essential for safe and informed engagement with the technology.

Google is facing an unprecedented fine from Russia totaling approximately 2 undecillion rubles, equivalent to $2.5 decillion. This follows years of accumulated penalties tied to restrictions on Russian pro-Kremlin media.

The penalty arose from legal actions taken by Russian state-affiliated media outlets Tsargrad and RIA FAN, which sued Google after blocking their YouTube channels.

The fine reportedly started with daily penalties of 100,000 rubles in 2020 and has compounded weekly, according to an anonymous source cited by Russia’s RBC news website. Citing an unnamed source familiar with the court rulings, this accumulation allegedly stemmed from Google’s continued blocking of state-run and pro-Kremlin media channels.

The blocked accounts included 17 Russian media outlets and television channels, including Channel One and the military-affiliated Zvezda broadcaster. YouTube’s content restrictions on these are believed to be linked to their support of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which led Russian authorities to respond with financial penalties.

Google Russia Subsidiary Declares Bankruptcy

Following intensifying sanctions and the subsequent freezing of its Russian bank accounts, Google’s Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in 2022. Although Russia imposed substantial fines, it has not blocked access to YouTube, which remains one of the country’s most popular online platforms.

Google confirmed the ongoing legal challenges in Russia in its latest quarterly report, noting that “civil judgments that include compounding penalties have been imposed upon us in connection with disputes regarding the termination of accounts, including those of sanctioned parties.”

According to Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., revenues in 2023 exceeded $307 billion for 2023. However, it said that it does not anticipate the Russian fines to impact its financial position substantially. Alphabet’s stability appears to be largely unaffected, as evidenced by the 5% rise in after-market trading values shortly after its third-quarter earnings report.

Google ceased ad operations in Russia in March 2022 in compliance with international sanctions. Over the past months, the company also stopped creating new accounts for Russian users and disabled AdSense accounts within the country. As of the latest update, although authorities imposed repeated fines, there is no full ban on the company’s services.

Google has signed an agreement to support the construction of seven small nuclear reactors in the U.S. to help meet the country’s rising demand for electricity, particularly for its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal is with nuclear-energy startup Kairos Power and represents the first commercial construction of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in the United States. The companies announced that the reactors are expected to add 500 megawatts of power by the end of the decade.

Google Partnership with Kairos for Nuclear Energy

Under the agreement, Kairos Power will deliver the reactors, each using molten fluoride salt as a coolant rather than the traditional water-cooling method. The plan includes a 50-megawatt reactor followed by three power plants with two 75-megawatt reactors each. These smaller reactors are designed to be more efficient to construct compared to conventional nuclear plants, which typically have a capacity of around 1,000 megawatts.

The power-purchase agreement follows a model similar to those Google used with renewable energy providers, like wind and solar. Although the exact location of the reactors has not yet been determined, the project aims to begin operations between 2030 and 2035. The company also has a demonstration reactor project in Tennessee, slated to start operating in 2027.

Small Modular Reactors to Power Google’s Energy Needs

The nuclear reactors built by Kairos will generate enough power to support the equivalent of a midsize city or a single AI data center campus. It has not been decided whether the power will flow directly to Google’s data centers or the regional grid. Google intends to count this nuclear power toward its carbon-reduction goals.

Google’s need for increased power comes at a time when its data centers, particularly those that support AI operations, are driving demand. The deal answers the challenge of finding customers willing to commit to first-of-its-kind reactor projects, which can be more expensive initially.

Kairos Power has begun preparations for building the reactors, with a facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where it is testing systems and components. The company has clearance from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build its demonstration reactor but will need further approvals to proceed with the full-scale reactors planned for Google.

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced Thursday that it has initiated a cross-border statutory inquiry into Google Ireland Limited due to concerns about the latter’s compliance with European data protection laws.

As per a press statement, the investigation focuses on whether Google conducted a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA). The expectation is that Google should have complied with the guidelines before processing the personal data of EU and European Economic Area (EEA) citizens during the development of its artificial intelligence (AI) model, Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2).

The DPC stressed the importance of DPIA, as it is a key process for building and demonstrating compliance. “It ensures that data controllers identify and mitigate against any data protection risks arising from a type of processing that entails a high risk. It seeks to ensure, among other things, that the processing is necessary and proportionate and that appropriate safeguards are in place in light of the risks,” the commission said.

The DPC also highlighted Article 35 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which mandates a DPIA before data processing, especially involving new technologies. The inquiry will help determine whether Google adequately assessed and mitigated these risks before proceeding with the AI model’s development.

Google’s AI Under Scrutiny

The makers of Google’s latest AI model, PaLM 2, designed it with advanced AI interfaces and natural language processing capabilities. These require massive datasets for training because they may include personal and confidential information. Authorities are, therefore, questioning how such data is collected, processed, and protected.

Google recently led the development of generative AI tools like Gemini (formerly called Bard), which has the ability to access vast amounts of data. Other tech giants like Open AI (for ChatGPT) and Meta (for Llama AI model) have faced similar inquiries in the past.

The announcement by Irish authorities comes just two days after the European Commission won two separate cases against Apple and Google, slapping them with a fine worth billions of dollars. A Google spokesperson had expressed their disappointment with the Court’s decision.

EU’s now outgoing antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager called the case against Google a “catalyst for change.” She noted that even the most powerful tech companies could be held accountable.
