Trump Teases Tariff Rollback After Talks With Xi

April 23, 2025

President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about a potential trade deal with Beijing, announcing that a significant tariff rollback may happen soon following negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In the Oval Office after a brief swearing-in ceremony for U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins, President Trump shared his thoughts on the ongoing trade talks with China. He described the negotiations as “doing fine,” noting that “everybody wants to have involvement” in American markets.

President Trump emphasized that both he and Chinese officials would approach future discussions in a “very nice” manner. However, he remained firm in his belief that China would ultimately have to reach a trade deal agreement to address the substantial tariffs he has unilaterally imposed in his trade dispute with China—and with the global community.

“Ultimately, they have to make a deal, because otherwise they’re not going to be able to deal in the United States, and we want them involved, but they have to, and other countries have to make a deal, and if they don’t make a deal, we’ll set the deal,” President Trump stated. “We’re going to be setting the deal, and it’ll be a fair deal for everybody and it’ll be — I think it’s a process that’s going to go pretty quickly,” he added.

President Trump also addressed the 145% tariff, calling it “very high.” He indicated that while future tariffs would be significantly lower, they would not be reduced to zero.

After President Trump postponed the “reciprocal” tariffs on other trade partners for 90 days, the tariff rate on Chinese imports remained unchanged, while the tariffs on other nations were reduced to 10 percent.

“We’re going to be very nice. They’re going to be very nice, and we’ll see what happens. But ultimately, they have to make a deal because otherwise they’re not going to be able to deal in the United States,” the President stated, referring to China.

President Trump expressed confidence in a potential tariff rollback deal, attributing his optimism to his strong relationship with President Xi. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also revealed that the Trump administration has received 18 trade proposals from various countries as negotiations continue.

Earlier, Leavitt claimed that President Trump’s approach sparked a surge of interest from countries eager to forge new bilateral trade agreements. Leavitt argued that the imposition or threat of heavy tariffs on major trading partners has forced other nations to the negotiating table, aiming to undo decades of global supply chain integration.
