Sam Bankman-Fried, the former FTX CEO, has reportedly been placed in solitary confinement following his unauthorized Tucker Carlson interview. This fueled speculation that he is seeking a presidential pardon.
According to the New York Times, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons representative confirmed Bankman-Fried’s interview at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center was unauthorized. He has been in custody at the facility for 18 months.
Federal prison regulations impose strict controls on inmate communications, outlining specific rules on who can contact them and the permitted methods of communication.
Bankman-Fried’s interview on Carlson’s YouTube channel quickly drew widespread attention, garnering over 730,000 views.
While Carlson did not directly question Bankman-Fried about the possibility of a pardon from President Donald Trump, Bankman-Fried’s openness to certain Republican perspectives fueled speculation about whether he could seek clemency.
Tucker Carlson Interview Previously Planned
Following FTX’s collapse, Bankman-Fried outlined a 19-point strategy aimed at rehabilitating his public image, according to a memo disclosed by federal prosecutors.

The list retrieved from Bankman-Fried’s FTX email account and filed in March 2024 detailed his plan to appear on Carlson’s YouTube channel, publicly align with the Republican Party, and push back against what he referred to as the “woke agenda.”
Following his previously outlined strategy, Bankman-Fried — once a significant donor to the Democratic Party — used the platform to align himself with Republican viewpoints.
“In 2020, I was center-left, and I gave to Biden’s campaign,” Bankman-Fried stated. Furthermore, Bankman-Fried discussed his time behind bars and offered his perspective on U.S. cryptocurrency regulations. He also insisted that he does not consider himself “a criminal.”
Prior to his interview with Carlson, Bankman-Fried had spoken about his evolving political views. In an interview with The New York Sun, the former FTX CEO expressed growing disillusionment with the Biden administration and the Democratic Party, particularly regarding their stance on cryptocurrency regulation.
Since the downfall of FTX, Bankman-Fried has repeatedly sought his release, ramping up efforts following President Trump’s recent decision to pardon Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
