Bianca Wyler, the leader of the Collectible Avatars (RCAs) project at Reddit, has announced her exit from the company, leaving users worried about the future of the program and its place on the platform.
“My role at Reddit has come to a close. While I am saddened by this transition, I am incredibly proud of the work I accomplished during my time there,” she wrote in a LinkedIn post on January 6, announcing her departure from the company.
Bianca Wyler took the helm of the RCA project in June 2024, stepping into a challenging role as the NFT initiative grappled with declining momentum and an uncertain path forward.
Simultaneously, the company announced it would be scaling back its “Collectible Expressions” feature. This feature, which incorporated animated elements tied to users’ RCAs, was part of Reddit’s broader NFT offerings but faced a reduction as the platform reassessed its priorities.
The exit of Bianca Wyler comes a little over a year after Reddit made the decision to discontinue its cryptocurrency reward program, marking another shift in the platform’s approach to blockchain-related initiatives.
Following Wyler’s departure, some Reddit users observed that comments from her account had been removed, fueling speculation that the platform might be preparing to discontinue the Collectible Avatars program altogether.
RCAs are a series of millions of unique NFTs hosted on the Polygon blockchain, primarily featuring the platform’s signature cartoon alien mascot. These avatars can be integrated into user profiles and offer additional benefits, such as enhanced comment visibility on the site.
Sales of the NFTs have significantly declined since their peak in late 2022. In the final three months of 2024, secondary market sales consistently hovered around $100,000 per month, reflecting a sharp drop in trading activity compared to their earlier success.
RCAs were launched in July 2022 and introduced as distinctive NFTs on the Polygon blockchain. Despite a downturn in sales, data from Dune Analytics indicates that the total number of RCA holders remains robust, estimated to be between 29 and 33.5 million.
If the program were to be discontinued, it could impact millions of users who currently own RCAs. NFT collectors on the platform are expressing uncertainty about whether they would retain access to their RCAs in the event of a complete shutdown.
