Elon Musk Says ‘LMAO’ to Senator Warren’s Conflict-of-Interest Comment

December 18, 2024

Elon Musk has addressed Senator Elizabeth Warren’s concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest following his appointment as co-leader of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

In a post on his platform X, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX claimed that Senator Warren’s scrutiny was influenced by the parents of Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), suggesting that her criticisms were being written by them.

Musk’s use of the nickname “Pocahontas” for Warren mirrors a term that was reportedly used by former President Trump’s team, as previously noted by Business Insider.

The business magnate has developed a strong connection with President-elect Donald Trump, dating back to his endorsement of the Republican candidate in July. Elon Musk notably contributed more than $250 million to support Trump’s campaign and has emerged as a significant figure in the cryptocurrency space.

Musk’s comments come after Senator Warren sent a letter to Trump’s transition team, expressing concerns that his new role could create conflicts between government influence and private business interests. She called for stricter conflict-of-interest regulations in response.

“Mr. Musk’s substantial private interests present a massive conflict of interest with the role he has taken on as your ‘unofficial co-president,’”  Warren wrote in her letter. “Currently, the American public has no way of knowing whether the advice that he is whispering to you in secret is good for the country – or merely good for his own bottom line.”

Warren noted that Musk’s position as co-chair of a newly established advisory body, which operates outside of the U.S. government, means he is not a government employee. The senator emphasized the significant conflicts Musk could encounter and stressed the importance of him adhering to ethical standards similar to those required of public officials.

Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt dismissed Warren’s concerns, instead focusing on praising Musk’s contributions. Leavitt criticized Warren, calling her a “career politician whose societal impact is 1/1024th of Elon Musk’s,” and emphasized that Trump’s transition team upholds strong ethical standards.

In November, Trump’s transition team released an ethics pledge, committing to avoid both real and perceived conflicts of interest. The pledge stipulates that team members must refrain from participating in any matters that could directly conflict with their own financial interests, or those with whom they maintain a business or close personal relationship.
