Microsoft has disclosed in an SEC filing that shareholders will vote on a proposal to invest in Bitcoin at their December 10 meeting. However, the company’s board has recommended voting against it, emphasizing that the proposal, introduced by a think tank shareholder, is not a priority for the tech giant.
The filing stated that the “Board recommends a vote against this proposal.”
Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth), Partner at CEHV shared, “this is a fringe proposal by a think tank shareholder, and is not a serious consideration by Microsoft at large.”
Contrasting Crypto Strategies: BlackRock Embraces Bitcoin ETFs While Vanguard Stays Cautious
Vanguard and BlackRock are significant shareholders in Microsoft, with Vanguard holding the largest stake at 9%, while BlackRock has 7.82%.
BlackRock is a major player in the cryptocurrency market, launching Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that have attracted over $26 billion in assets under management. In contrast, Vanguard, which manages $9.3 trillion in assets, has taken a more cautious approach to crypto.
After the introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, Vanguard announced in a blog post that it would not be creating or offering crypto-related ETFs to its clients. “Vanguard does not have plans to create a Vanguard Bitcoin ETF or other crypto-related products,” the company stated. “Additionally, such products from other issuers will not be offered on our brokerage platform.”
Other notable shareholders in Microsoft include State Street Corp., Capital Group, Morgan Stanley, and JP Morgan.
Microsoft Expands Blockchain Offerings: Collaborates with Space and Time, Aptos Labs
Microsoft is working together with the decentralized data platform Space and Time to provide developers with access to real-time blockchain data directly from the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. This collaboration follows a $20 million strategic funding round led by Microsoft’s venture capital arm, M12, about seven months ago.
The Azure Marketplace is an online store that offers applications and services for Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. Azure is the second-largest cloud infrastructure provider globally, behind Amazon Web Services, according to Statista.
Space and Time specializes in delivering real-time data indexed from major blockchains, integrating it with off-chain datasets supplied by clients. The result is a hybrid transactional and analytical database that comes pre-loaded with real-time, blockchain-native data.
Additionally, Aptos Labs announced a partnership with Microsoft to develop the Aptos Assistant, a chatbot powered by ChatGPT designed to deliver information and analysis about the Aptos ecosystem to both users and developers.
