Peter Todd, an early Bitcoin developer, has strongly denied claims made in the new documentary by HBO titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which suggests he could be Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin.
Todd took to X (formerly Twitter) to refute the allegations, criticizing the film’s speculative nature and accusing its makers of endangering his safety by associating him with the Bitcoin creator. Despite Todd’s denial, the documentary has stirred renewed debates within the cryptocurrency community.
HBO is behind the release of Money Electric, continuing its tradition of producing investigative documentaries on high-profile, controversial subjects. Cullen Hoback, known for directing Q: Into the Storm, directed the film, which HBO Documentary Films produced in collaboration with Hyrax Films, HyperObject Industries, and Hello Pictures. Executive producers include Adam McKay, Todd Schulman, and Cullen Hoback, all of whom have a track record of tackling complex and polarizing topics.
HBO’s motivation for releasing this documentary stems from its strategy of diving into real-world issues with global significance, particularly in areas like cryptocurrency, which continues to shape financial and technological landscapes.
