AI Will Be Key to Countering AI Threats, Says Nvidia CEO

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) itself is the most effective way to address the harmful uses of AI technology.

Speaking at a Bipartisan Policy Center event last Friday, Huang remarked, “It’s going to take AI to catch the darker side of AI.” He explained that AI’s ability to generate fake data and false information at high speeds necessitates the use of equally advanced AI systems to detect and mitigate these threats.

“The reason for that is pretty clear: AI is going to be producing fake data and false information at very high speeds,” Huang said. “So it’ll take somebody with very high speeds to detect that and to shut it down.”

Huang compared the situation to cybersecurity, noting that “almost every single company” faces constant threats of cyberattacks. He added, “It’s going to take even better cybersecurity to defend ourselves. We just have to make sure that we stay ahead; it’s going to take AI to help us stay ahead.”

Public Concerns Over AI in Elections

As the U.S. approaches the federal elections, concerns about the misuse of AI to spread disinformation are growing. A Pew Research Center survey, published in September 19, revealed that nearly 60% of Americans are “extremely” or “very” concerned about AI being used to create fake information regarding presidential candidates. Both Democrats and Republicans expressed similar levels of concern.

Around 40% of respondents believed that AI would be used “mostly for bad” during the election, while only 5% said the opposite. Huang called for the U.S. government to take a more active role in AI. “The government has to become a practitioner of AI, not just a governor of AI,” he said.

He singled out the Energy and Defense departments, urging them to embrace AI technology to keep up with advancements. Huang also suggested the U.S. consider building an AI supercomputer, stating, “The scientists would be more than happy to jump on it and create new AI algorithms to advance our country.”

Increased Energy Use Predicted for AI

Huang also discussed the rising energy demands associated with AI as more data is processed. He predicted that AI data centers could require “several — 10 times, 20 times — more” energy than they do today. The International Energy Agency estimates that current data centers already consume up to 1.5% of global electricity.

Huang proposed that future AI data centers could be built in areas with “excess energy” that is difficult to transport, suggesting that AI could adapt to these remote locations. “We can transport the data center,” he said, explaining that this would allow for more efficient energy use where it is needed.
