Kawasaki Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Robotic Horse at Osaka Expo

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has introduced a concept for a hydrogen-powered, four-legged robotic horse, designed to traverse diverse terrains and potentially transport people in the future.

At a preview event leading up to the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, the Japanese manufacturer revealed its latest innovation, a robot named “Corleo.” However, a working prototype has yet to be released to the public.

Corleo stands apart from other animal-inspired robots, as it is specifically designed to carry riders. Equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) and uniquely crafted legs, it can traverse challenging terrains with ease.

“CORLEO is a completely new means of transportation that combines Kawasaki’s motorcycle and robotics technologies,” Kawasaki executive officer Takashi Torri said. 

On April 3, Kawasaki released a promotional video showcasing Corleo navigating various rugged environments, including rocky cliffs, dense forests, snowy terrain, and streams. However, it’s important to note that the footage is not actual footage of the robot in action, as Corleo is still in development and not yet ready for riders.

In the video, Kawasaki demonstrated how Corleo is designed to transport people across diverse landscapes. The robot’s innovative features include inward-facing knees and rubber-coated, two-toed cloven hooves, which are slip-resistant and capable of absorbing surface irregularities, according to the company.

The robotic horse will also feature a motorcycle-style dashboard, displaying essential data such as weight distribution and hydrogen levels. At night, the system enhances visibility by projecting guiding markers onto the road, helping riders stay on track, according to Kawasaki representatives.

According to the Daily Mail, Corleo is powered by a 150cc engine that runs on hydrogen gas, producing only water as an emission. This makes it more environmentally friendly than a real horse, with significantly less waste.

As Corleo continues its journey from concept to reality, it represents a bold step into the future of transportation, blending advanced robotics with eco-friendly hydrogen technology. While it’s still in the development phase, the potential for this robotic horse to revolutionize how we navigate rugged terrains could soon be within reach. As Kawasaki Heavy Industries pushes forward, all eyes will be on how this futuristic creation evolves, paving the way for sustainable mobility solutions.
