Radio host Alex Jones has alleged that President Donald Trump directed Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to launch an investigation into the U.S. Federal Reserve.
In an X broadcast, Jones made this assertion, aligning it with DOGE’s ongoing scrutiny of other government agencies. The host also discussed that since its establishment in 1913, the Federal Reserve has never undergone a full audit, raising questions about the transparency of its operations.
While the Fed is subject to audits by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and external accounting firms, certain aspects of its operations remain off-limits.
Specifically, audits do not extend to the Fed’s monetary policy decisions or its transactions with foreign governments, including foreign exchange operations. These exclusions are designed to protect the Fed’s independence in making policy decisions without political influence.
Additionally, Jones shared a clip from Fox News that aired in November 2024, where U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell was asked whether he would resign if President Trump requested it. Powell’s response was a succinct, “No.”
“Fed. Chairman Jerome Powell has publicly pledged to disregard Trump’s authority, setting the stage for a major upcoming confrontation,” Jones wrote in his X post.
There have been ongoing calls in Congress for a more comprehensive audit of the Federal Reserve, particularly regarding its actions on interest rates, emergency lending programs, and other monetary policies.
Proponents argue that increased transparency is necessary, while opponents emphasize the importance of preserving the Fed’s autonomy in managing the nation’s economy.
In support of the movement to audit the Federal Reserve, Musk voiced his endorsement for former U.S. Congressman Ron Paul to head a team potentially responsible for overseeing the audit.
During a January 9 interview with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier, President Trump commended Musk for his recent efforts in investigating various government agencies.
“I’m gonna tell him very soon, maybe in 24 hours, to go check the Department of Education. He’s gonna find the same thing. Then I’m gonna go to the military. We’re gonna find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse,” Trump stated.
DOGE Team Investigates $100B in Alleged Medicare Fraud
Musk’s DOGE has also reportedly uncovered $100 billion in waste within the Medicare and Medicaid systems after gaining access to their operations.
On Wednesday, Musk’s team, alongside two high-ranking veterans from the agency, began an in-depth review of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) payment and contracting systems, which oversee health insurance for roughly one in four Americans, as reported by USA Today.
“This is where the big money fraud is happening,” Musk wrote on Wednesday, addressing an X post that indicated his DOGE team is investigating the Medicare agency’s payment systems for fraudulent activity.
The most striking revelation came the following day when Musk tweeted that CMS had “wasted $100B of taxpayer money.”
This discovery comes at a time when the CMS handles more than a billion Medicare claims each year, monitors healthcare standards through facility inspections, and allocates billions in federal matching funds to state Medicaid programs.
