Meme Coins: A New Era Beyond the “Pump and Dump”
In a recent episode of his limited edition podcast titled, “Meme Mania and the 36 Chambers of Tech,” Kusama boldly declared that viral fame is a dead-end; memes must now wield utility and governance to become lasting forces, not fleeting sparks in the digital ether. He argued that only those projects with long-term vision, like the global titans with century-spanning goals, will truly endure.
He made clear that the days of “pump and dump” schemes must end. He stressed that such models hurt users and could trigger unwelcome regulation. Therefore, he is ushering in this new era of the “utility meme.” Kusama said, “we have still been treated like trash, and that isn’t what should happen moving forward,” underscoring the need for change.
Meme With Governance and Utility: The Core Principles
For Kusama, utility means creating value through governance, though that’s not the complete picture. He believes that projects must develop long-term plans that provide genuine value to the token holders.
Kusama shared, “utility memes, memes with governance and or a plan to impact the world in a positive way, will outlive all other tokens.” He further explained his core idea: “a true utility meme has a system and plan in place to utilize the meme as a way to give a business or a person or a company or a country or a city utility.”
Kusama proudly pointed to the Shiba Inu ecosystem, highlighting SHIB, BONE, LEASH, and TREAT as functional examples of utility memes. Each has its own specific purpose, working together to demonstrate how a meme project can evolve into a functional system.
“We’ve already built 4 of them,” he shared, “SHIB has utility and governance. Bone has utility and governance, Lesh has utility and governance, and Treat has utility and governance.”
A Look into What’s Coming
Kusama’s vision isn’t just about the present; it’s about establishing a future where memes can be used for far more than just entertainment. He hinted that in his upcoming podcasts, he plans to showcase more of these utility memes.
“So how about next Monday we begin to showcase some of these utility memes that we have in the pipeline,” the Shiba Inu visionary said.
