President-elect Donald Trump has named David Sacks, former PayPal Chief Operating Officer (COO) and known regulation critic, for the White House AI and Crypto Czar role.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that Sacks would lead the administration’s policy initiatives on artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. The appointment aims to maintain America’s competitiveness in such rapidly growing sectors and establish the nation as the global leader in both industries.
Trump further stated that Sacks’ appointment would include overseeing the protection of free speech online, ensuring that America moves away from the influence of big tech bias and censorship.
According to a Bloomberg News report, while David Sacks may not have deep ties to the cryptocurrency and AI industries, tech investors appreciate his technology-friendly attitude and history of criticizing government regulations in these fields.
Prominent tech executive and investor Keith Rabois expressed confidence that Sacks will play a key role in ensuring the U.S. remains ahead of China in technological advancements. He emphasized that Sacks would also safeguard “newly emerging tech from left-wing censorship and bias.”
Leaders from prominent American tech companies, including those in Silicon Valley, argue that heavy-handed regulations could hinder progress and limit the potential of fast-evolving industries.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, congratulated Sacks on his nomination in a post on X. Altman, who has consistently emphasized the need to balance regulation with technological innovation, expressed his support for Sacks in navigating the future of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency policy.
David Sacks Gains Trump’s Favor
Tech founders and Silicon Valley venture capitalists who openly supported Trump during his campaign appear to be reaping the rewards of their endorsement.
Following his victory in the 2024 presidential election, Trump appointed one of his most prominent supporters, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, to head a newly created agency, the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Sacks appears to be the latest individual to gain the president’s favor.
Despite previously stating that Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack disqualified him from holding office again, Sacks shifted his position. Earlier this year, he hosted a high-ticket fundraiser for Trump’s 2024 campaign, signaling a notable change in his stance.
Additionally, Sacks hosted President-elect Trump on his All-In Podcast, a platform where he and fellow entrepreneurs discuss business, technology, and current events. In recent episodes, the podcast gained attention for its growing support of right-wing political viewpoints.
