A South Korean investigation has revealed that soldiers have compromised military secrets in exchange for cryptocurrency.

According to TV Chosun, the investigation found 29 cases of leaked classified information. One notable case involved a captain accused of sharing confidential documents about a special forces unit’s wartime missions. In return, the captain reportedly received 48 million won ($35,700) in cryptocurrency.

The investigation follows earlier reports that at least three active-duty soldiers handed over military passwords and secret documents to loan sharks. Prosecutors believe these soldiers traded the information to either invest in cryptocurrency or to pay off debts related to crypto investments. In one instance, authorities sentenced a captain to a suspended jail term and discharged him from the army after they found him guilty of leaking military secrets.

Multiple Incidents of Leaked Military Data

Data compiled by lawmaker Kang Dae-sik from the Ministry of National Defense shows that 29 cases of military secrets have leaked since 2021. The data revealed that six cases occurred in 2021, followed by eight in both 2022 and 2023. As of July 2024, seven additional cases have been recorded.

In 2021, a captain exchanged military secrets for money. Another officer took photos of a Korean Joint Command and Control System terminal and shared the images via the Telegram messaging app. The recipient of these images has not been identified. The data also showed senior soldiers selling classified information to private defense companies while another soldier sold copies of a top-secret military manual.

Some cases were linked to security lapses and misuse of personal devices. In one instance, a soldier sent videos of classified military equipment to his girlfriend via KakaoTalk. The soldier later claimed he intended to show her his daily life in the army.

Prosecutors have also indicted three loan sharks involved in these incidents, accusing them of accepting military secrets in exchange for illegal cash loans. Authorities are continuing to investigate further cases involving soldiers who may have been involved in similar activities, including the unauthorized sale or sharing of sensitive military data.
