Google Cloud Introduces Blockchain RPC Service

Google Cloud has launched its Blockchain Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service, aimed at simplifying the process for crypto developers to interact with blockchain data. The new service will initially support the Ethereum mainnet and testnet, with plans to include other blockchains in the future, according to a blog post from Google Cloud on Wednesday.

The company said that the Blockchain RPC service is launching with a free tier that allows up to 100 calls per second and one million daily requests. Google Cloud confirmed that the service is fully compatible with Ethereum’s JSON-RPC standard, allowing developers to integrate it into Ethereum-based decentralized applications (dApps) with ease.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is a protocol that allows applications to communicate with blockchain nodes by sending requests and receiving data. It enables developers to interact with a blockchain, such as querying blockchain data (like account balances or transaction histories) or sending transactions to the network. RPC is essential for decentralized applications (DApps) to function, as it allows them to communicate with the underlying blockchain in a reliable and structured way.

“Developers can add our Blockchain RPC service with a single line of code,” the company stated in the blog post.

Challenges in RPC Reliability

RPC reliability has been a persistent issue for blockchain developers, as delays or errors in RPC calls can impact the performance of dApps. Google Cloud noted that many decentralized applications require near-instant transaction settlement, which RPC failures can disrupt during periods of high network activity.

“RPC reliability has been a challenge for many developers. Even small delays can cause issues in DApps, which need to clear transactions quickly,” Google Cloud explained.

This issue was notably seen in June when the Ethereum layer-2 network ZKsync experienced significant delays and reduced functionality due to increased network activity and problems with RPC providers.

Google Cloud’s Blockchain RPC service follows the company’s April launch of its Web3 Portal, which offers blockchain developers resources such as data sets and tutorials. However, some crypto enthusiasts criticized the Web3 portal for its user interface and limited support for major blockchains like Bitcoin.

Despite these critiques, Google Cloud continues to expand its tools for blockchain developers. The new RPC service aims to improve developer access to reliable blockchain data. The company has indicated plans to add support for additional blockchains in the coming year to enhance the service’s capabilities further.
