Chris Larsen, co-founder and executive chairman of Ripple, is among 88 corporate leaders who have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
As reported by CNBC today, the endorsement was made through a letter signed by several prominent business figures, including Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, Jeremy Stoppelman, CEO of Yelp, Michael Lynton, chairman of Snap, and James Murdoch, former CEO of 21st Century Fox.
The letter supporting Harris’s presidential bid comes amid Ripple Labs’ ongoing legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Ripple has been involved in a lawsuit with the SEC for nearly four years over allegations of selling unregistered securities. Despite this backdrop, Larsen has publicly shown support for Harris’s campaign.
A former Ripple board member, Gene Sperling, also joined Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign. Sperling, who left the White House in early August to render his support, has served as an economic adviser under Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and was part of President Joe Biden’s administration since 2021. A report highlighted that “Ex-Ripple board member has joined Harris campaign,” noting Sperling’s shift from his previous roles to active involvement in the race.
David Plouffe, another adviser with a background in cryptocurrency, has also given his support. Plouffe, a former adviser to Binance and crypto payments provider Alchemy Pay, became part of Harris’s team earlier in the election cycle.
With the U.S. presidential election approaching, the crypto industry is abuzz with potential changes in regulatory leadership. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse reportedly predicted that “key crypto regulators, such as U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler, will have to step down no matter who wins the election.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Harris’s campaign mentioned in early August that the candidate could accept campaign donations in cryptocurrency through the Future Forward political action committee.
Chris Larsen is not the only cryptocurrency executive who has endorsed a U.S. presidential candidate. In June, Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest and a well-known Bitcoin proponent, endorsed Donald Trump, stating that she would vote for “who’s going to do the best job for our economy.” Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, co-founders of the Gemini crypto trading platform, have also pledged $1 million in Bitcoin to support Trump’s reelection campaign.
