Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently acquired a new Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domain, “dacc.eth,” for 0.187 ETH, valued at just under $500.
This purchase occurred ahead of a scheduled discussion on Aug. 22 regarding the concept of “defensive accelerationism” (d/acc) in an X Spaces event. Buterin will discuss the idea with Prime Intellect founder Vincent Weisser and Skylar Weaver, who leads Devcon at the Ethereum Foundation.
The concept of defensive accelerationism was initially introduced by Buterin in a November 2022 blog post titled “My Techno-Optimism.” The philosophy focuses on promoting technological development with caution, advocating for human-AI collaboration and decentralization.
Buterin’s stance is positioned against the dominant “effective accelerationism” (e/acc) perspective common in Silicon Valley, which generally supports rapid and unrestricted technological growth. Instead, Buterin’s d/acc promotes a measured approach that considers potential risks and prioritizes the development of tools to address issues like cybersecurity, misinformation, and resilient infrastructure.
On a related note, Buterin has expressed concern over the risks of “superintelligent” AI, warning against the potential dangers of unchecked technological advancement. Defensive accelerationism encourages innovation in ways that protect individuals and society, emphasizing the need for decentralized governance and avoiding centralized control over key technologies.
Buterin has highlighted that many proposals for technological progress rely on granting power to small, centralized entities, which his d/acc concept aims to counter.
Following the registration of “dacc.eth,” some crypto enthusiasts created unrelated memecoins under the same name, which saw significant price jumps. Despite the surge in interest, these tokens have no connection to Buterin or his advocacy for the defensive accelerationism concept.
The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has gained recognition within the Ethereum ecosystem, offering a decentralized alternative to traditional domain name systems. ENS allows users to register human-readable names like “dacc.eth,” replacing complex Ethereum addresses with simpler identifiers. This function is particularly useful for enhancing the accessibility of Ethereum and blockchain technology.
