Tucker Carlson Claims Bitcoin a CIA Creation

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has ignited a fresh wave of speculation surrounding the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, by boldly asserting that the cryptocurrency was a clandestine project of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

During a speech at a private event held at the Bitcoin 2024 conference, Carlson confidently asserted that the world’s largest cryptocurrency was, in fact, a creation of the CIA.

“Obviously it was the CIA, we all know that,” Carlson declared to a receptive audience. The claim, while met with laughter by some, has sparked renewed interest in the shadowy figure behind Bitcoin.

Carlson’s theory echoes a sentiment shared by many in the cryptocurrency community who have long expressed skepticism about the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. The pseudonym, coupled with the decentralized nature of Bitcoin, has fueled countless theories and conspiracy speculations.

While Carlson’s claim is far from concrete evidence, it aligns with the CIA’s acknowledged interest in cryptocurrency. The agency director, William Burns, during the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Summit in 2021, admitted that the CIA has multiple projects to keep track of cryptocurrencies.

Responding to a question about whether the intelligence agency was able to constrain ransomware attacks emanating from abroad, Burns said his predecessor “had set in motion a number of different projects focused on cryptocurrency and trying to look at second- and third-order consequences as well and helping with our colleagues in other parts of the U.S. government to provide solid intelligence on what we’re seeing.”

However, other prominent figures dismissed Carlson’s theory. Author Philip Heartly suggested that Bitcoin’s characteristics align with the concept of a one-world currency, a notion that has been the subject of much speculation. In contrast, cryptographer Saifedean Ammous emphasized the open-source nature of Bitcoin, arguing that its code is publicly accessible and has been scrutinized by thousands for years.

“I wouldn’t be surprised, something has always felt shifty to me,” said Toby Bolton, founder of .zkdid, a Zero Knowledge Decentralised Personhood Protocol.

Popular English conspiracy theorist David Icke asked, “If the CIA started Bitcoin, Tucker, and now Trump and his Silicon Valley coterie are pushing it, then do think by any chance that there might be more to know?”

As the debate over Bitcoin’s origins continues, Carlson’s provocative claim is likely to fuel further speculation and scrutiny. Whether the truth lies with a clandestine government agency or an anonymous individual, the mystery surrounding Nakamoto remains a captivating enigma in the world of cryptocurrency.
