Former President Donald Trump has selected U.S. Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate. The Bitcoiner U.S. Senator from Ohio, known for his support for cryptocurrencies, has received a significant endorsement from influential tech leaders and prominent figures in the tech and crypto space following the announcement.
The recent announcement of former President Donald Trump that Vance is his running mate is a surprise to many. The unexpected alliance has sparked both excitement within the financial world, with supporters envisioning a potential paradigm shift in monetary policy.
In a statement, former President Donald Trump announced Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate for the upcoming election. Trump emphasized Vance’s impressive background, noting his service in the Marine Corps, his academic excellence at Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and his successful career in technology and finance. Trump also highlighted Vance’s bestselling book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was adapted into a major motion picture.
“J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate,” Trump said, also pointing to Vance’s focus on American workers and farmers, particularly in key states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Minnesota.
Trump concluded by expressing his confidence in Vance’s ability to serve as Vice President, stating that he is the best choice to champion the hardworking men and women of the country. Following the announcement, Elon Musk tweeted, “TRUMP VANCE Resounds with victory,” and followed up with, “Congratulations @JDVance1! Excellent decision by @realDonaldTrump.”
Balaji S. Srinivasan, an American entrepreneur and investor, expressed his support for Vance, stating, “JD Vance is a great choice for VP. Marine Corps veteran, bestselling author, successful tech investor, and US Senator. He understands military, media, tech, finance, and politics. @JDVance1 is a brave man, and a Renaissance man.”
Vance, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, has been at the forefront of pushing for clear cryptocurrency regulations. He has been drafting legislation to reform digital asset regulation in the U.S., establishing himself as a leading pro-crypto candidate.
Vance has also been a vocal critic of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and his approach to crypto regulation. In February, Vance, along with Senators Bill Hagerty and Cynthia Lummis, wrote to Gensler, expressing concerns over the agency’s enforcement actions and criticizing its conduct as unethical and unprofessional.
Vance also supported the repeal of the SEC’s controversial Staff Accounting Bulletin (SAB) 121. Furthermore, he disclosed bitcoin holdings valued between $100,001 and $250,000 in 2022, filed in October 2023, highlighting his personal investment in the crypto market. Vance currently owns 3.3 BTC, showcasing his commitment to the digital currency. Additionally, he is the fourth largest holder of Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs.
Last month, Politico reported that Vance had been circulating a draft digital assets bill, aiming for a July introduction. The bill would reportedly give crypto operators more latitude than the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) approved by the House, which envisioned crypto oversight by the CFTC rather than the SEC.
