The British Red Cross is now accepting Shiba Inu (SHIB), the world’s second-largest dog-themed altcoin by market capitalization, as a form of donation. This move, announced last month, marks a significant step in the organization’s embrace of digital currencies to support its global humanitarian efforts.
The British Red Cross Society is the U.K. arm of the worldwide neutral and impartial humanitarian network, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Through a partnership with The Giving Block, a platform specializing in cryptocurrency donations for nonprofits, supporters can now contribute SHIB and other cryptocurrencies to the British Red Cross.
The donations are processed and converted to U.S. dollars, which are then transferred to the organization on a weekly basis. The Giving Block applies varying fees depending on the donation amount, ranging from 1% to 3.9%.
This initiative aligns with a growing trend among Red Cross societies worldwide to accept cryptocurrency donations. The Singapore Red Cross began accepting crypto in late 2023, while the American Red Cross has been doing so since 2014.
