Shibtoshi on Web3: Revolution or Hype? An Exclusive Interview

The internet as we know it is evolving. Web3, the decentralized web powered by blockchain technology, is poised to disrupt traditional power structures and give users greater control over their digital lives. But is this the dawn of a new internet era, or just another tech fad?

In this exclusive interview, The Shib talks to Shibtoshi, the pseudonymous CEO and founder of SquidGrow, to discuss the potential, challenges, and future of Web3. Shibtoshi, an early adopter and passionate advocate of cryptocurrency, shares his insights on how Web3 will transform industries, redefine ownership, and empower users. He also addresses the critical need for privacy-focused solutions like SilentSwap in an increasingly surveilled digital world.

The Shib: In your own words, what is Web3, and what are the key distinctions between Web3 and the current internet (Web2)?

Shibtoshi: Web3 is the next evolution of the internet, where the key focus is on decentralization and giving more control back to users. Unlike Web2, which is dominated by big companies that control most of the data and services, Web3 uses blockchain technology to create a more open and user-centric internet.

In Web2, we rely on platforms like Facebook, Google, and Amazon, which manage our data and often profit from it. Web3, on the other hand, allows users to own their data and even participate in the governance of online communities through decentralized networks. It’s all about empowering users and reducing the power of intermediaries.

The Shib: What are the most compelling potential benefits and use cases of Web3 that could reshape industries, economies, and our digital experiences? What are the most significant challenges and risks associated with Web3 adoption?

Shibtoshi: Web3 has some pretty exciting potential benefits. It could revolutionize industries by making everything more transparent and secure. For instance, in finance, decentralized finance (DeFi) can cut out the middlemen, making transactions faster and cheaper. Supply chains can become more efficient and traceable, and digital identities can give us more control over our personal information.

But with more traceability comes another level of security concerns. As it stands, we are losing our privacy more and more with KYC (know your customer) requirements and similar measures. This is why I think SilentSwap is a game-changer. It’s a privacy-focused, cross chain aggregator that is non-custodial, decentralized, and trustless. Remember, not your keys, not your crypto. That’s why, while building SilentSwap, we made sure you maintain complete control of your assets every step of the way. I believe it will add so much value to the masses, allowing us to reclaim our privacy.

On the flip side, there are still some big challenges and risks. Web3 tech is still pretty new and can be complicated to understand and use. Security is a major concern because if you lose your private keys, you lose access to your assets with no way to recover them. Plus, with less regulation, there’s a risk of scams and fraud.

The Shib: Do you believe Web3 will be a passing trend, or is it the dawn of a new internet era? What factors will determine its long-term success or failure?

Shibtoshi: No, I don’t believe crypto is a trend. I think it’s still evolving and becoming more adopted. It’s just getting going. Web3 is definitely the dawn of a new internet era. There will be challenges in the upcoming months and years, but I believe they can be overcome. The long term success will depend on factors like user adoption, scalability, and the regulatory environment. If we can navigate these, Web3 has a bright future ahead.

The Shib: How will Web3 impact the way we own and control our digital assets, data, and online identities? What are the implications for privacy, security, and user empowerment?

Shibtoshi: Web3 is going to completely change how we own and control our digital assets, data, and online identities. One of the big attractions to crypto is the ability to remain anonymous in most instances. This is why utilities like SilentSwap and privacy blockchains like Secret Network and Shiba Inu’s upcoming privacy blockchain, governed by Treat Token, are so important. They allow users to move assets and transact in a way that keeps our movements private.

Just like we wouldn’t want our Venmo transactions or credit card statements shared publicly, these applications and blockchains are becoming crucial for protecting our online identities. I think the masses are starting to realize that. Web3 empowers users by giving them control and ownership of their data and assets directly, without relying on third parties. This means better security and more privacy.

To minimize security risks, it’s important to interact only with services that are trusted and audited. As more people understand this, Web3 will continue to grow and transform our digital experiences.

The Shib: Which specific industries or sectors are most likely to be disrupted or transformed by Web3 technologies in the coming years? Can you provide concrete examples of how this transformation might unfold?

Shibtoshi: Web3 is set to shake up quite a few industries in the coming years in my opinion. Finance is a big one DeFi (Decentralized Finance) is already making waves by letting people lend, borrow, and trade without traditional banks. For example, platforms like SGS.com, Shibaswap.com and Uniswap.org allows for decentralized trading of assets directly between users.

Another sector is supply chain management. Blockchain can track products from origin to destination, ensuring authenticity and reducing fraud. Companies like IBM are already using blockchain to improve transparency and efficiency in their supply chains. The gaming industry is also an area for disruption. Play to earn games, where players can earn crypto and trade in game assets, are gaining popularity. Think about games like Axie Infinity, where players can make real money from their in game activities.

Real estate could see changes too. Imagine buying a house using smart contracts on the blockchain, which could streamline the process and reduce the need for intermediaries like banks and lawyers. These are just a few examples, but the potential for Web3 to transform many aspects of our lives is huge and very exciting.

The Shib: If you were to advise entrepreneurs, investors, or policymakers about Web3, what would be your top recommendations for navigating this emerging landscape?

Shibtoshi: If I were to advise entrepreneurs, investors, or policymakers about Web3, here’s what I’d suggest:

To the entrepreneurs, there is a lot of room for growth in the crypto space. If you see a void or something that can add value to the masses, make your mark on the space and build it the way you see fit to add value. Web3 is still in its early stages, and there’s a huge potential for innovation and new solutions.

To the policymakers, there’s a way to allow crypto to thrive while ensuring we all remain anonymous and our privacy and data are protected. It’s crucial to balance this with upholding AML (Anti Money Laundering) and OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) laws. Finding that balance will help create a safer and more trustworthy environment for everyone.

To the investors, always do your due diligence no matter who tells you about an opportunity. Use caution and never invest more than you can afford to lose. The crypto space can be volatile, and thorough research is essential to make informed decisions. Navigating the Web3 landscape requires a careful and thoughtful approach, whether you’re building, regulating, or investing.

Shibtoshi’s insights provide a balanced perspective on the Web3 landscape. While the potential for disruption and innovation is immense, challenges remain. However, with the development of user-friendly interfaces, scalable solutions, robust security measures, and thoughtful regulation, Web3 could indeed fulfill its promise of a decentralized, user-empowered internet. The journey may be fraught with obstacles, but the destination—a digital world where individuals control their data, assets, and online identities—is worth striving for.
